I am a graphics nut. It bothers me to look at anything less than HD on HDMI. So....what graphics or resolution is the Wii U gamepad capable of? Looking at it it definitely doesn't look like HD. But I'm sure its not meant to be. In my case I don't have to share the tv anyways, and my eight year old could care less about HD graphics when I send her off with the gamepad! Just curious as to e screen quality on the Wii U gamepad itself.
It displays images in optimised 480p (i.e. the best kind of 480p) and given the size of the controller's screen, you should find that you'll experience a similar visual experience to that of an HDTV on the GamePad. It's very crisp and clear, to say the least.
Ok so you say the gamepad is enhanced 480p? Hmmmn....well 480p is not near HD so how can you say it gives an even similar experience to HD? The screen does look decent...until I look up at the same thing on my tv. Then the colors look brighter and more vibrant. What is the technology on the gamepad screen, looks like a basic lcd to me. Not to rag on it...but Nintendo could have put a few more bucks into the gamepads display (like LED, or even OLED) as the 6" screen is the MAIN thing about the controller. I would've easily paid a few buck more for that. To Nintendo's merrit though...they packed everything else you can imagine into the gamepad

I keep hearing you say "a few bucks".
How much is "a few" to you?

@Nitendnut: It might be worth it to you to locate a Wii U kiosk in your area — a wal-mart, gamestop, etc. — so that you can see the gamepad in person and try it for yourself. I messed around with one in a store a few days ago and it seemed crisp and clear enough to me, coming from the DS and 3DS.

Who cares about resolution, really? I mean, does HD really matter? Something could be 8k and still look like crap, it's more about art style, shaders, textures, animations, etc.
Lots of censorship here...

Ok questions.....To me $50-$75 is a few bucks more I'd pay for an LED or OLED gamepad. And who said HD doesnt matter? If thats the case, keep your Wii and save the $ on a Wii U. Oh...and I do have a Deluxe Wii U....So no need to see a kiosk
If it looks fine to the point that you're not sure whether it's HD or not why do you need to know what the resolution is? Besides the measure you want for resolution is not the resolution but the pixel density.... and the Wii U GamePad has a pixel density between the iPad 2 and New iPad. So it's that sort of resolution.

Ok so the Wii U gamepad is has slightly better graphics than my 3DS XL.
The consoles streams a HD image to the GamePad, so it's going to have a LOT better graphics than the 3DS XL. It's like if you hook-up a Ps3 to a SD TV, still looks great, but not as sharp as it does in HD on a HD TV.

@19Robb92: The image on the GamePad isn't HD, it's optimised 480p.
I know it isn't HD. Never said it was. But I'm pretty sure the system itself sends the same output to the GamePad as it does to the TV(?), but since the GamePad resolution is 480p it'll get somewhat downgraded (just like it would if you'd be playing a WiiU/Ps3/360 on a SD TV).
