Topic: How do Wii games look on hd television? esp. xenoblade

I ordered myself a couple of wii games, should arrive this week (I have fallen into quite a shopping spree this month...) . Right now I have the option of buying xenoblade chronicles (about 45 EUR) new and sealed. I wonder if I should do that or wait until the 3ds version comes out. I guess it will be optimized for 3ds possibilities. Can anyone tell me how it looks when played on a wii u? How does it fare controlwise? Is there any possibility that it will be better on 3ds?

They look fine to me, a little better even, due to HDMI.

They generally look great, Skyward Sword seems to be the only one that feels off but that maybe due to having played Skyloft and Sealed Grounds way too much on Hyrule Warriors recently. Expectations are that the New 3DS version of Xenoblade Chronicles is going to look worse than the Wii version, don't expect something like Super Mario Galaxy 3D or Twilight Princess 3D happening.

They look better on the Wii than the Wii U. Also, the 3DS isn't as powerful as the GameCube or the Wii, so don't expect Xenoblade to run better on the 3DS, because it won't.

Xenoblade is jaggies, a nice world, but with poor textures and a lot of jaggies. It won't get better on new 3DS, I'll tell you that much.

The main concern about that game is if you have the patience for MMO action bar combat. I couldn't take it and quit my playthrough because I enjoyed watching the story on youtube more than actually playing through it. I much prefer Dragon Age Inquisition's combat as it's sans action bar and actually maps your abilities to the buttons.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

It may be better in terms of improvements and extra's, but graphically it doesn't look as good on New3DS as it does on the Wii. But you do get the bonus of 3D on the New 3DS. But then there's the possibility that the game won't even come to the west on New3DS.

Xenoblade looks much better being played on my 59" HDTV via HDMI cables on my Wii U than on the Wii. I'm playing Metroid Prime 2 (from Trilogy) as well and again, looks better played on my Wii U.

They look crisper on the WiiU, but because of that pixelation is also more noticeable.

So they look both better and worse depending on how you spin things.

Some games look worse, imo, like Twilight Princess & Resident Evil 4. .

Those games are not adopted properly for 16:9 widescreen tv sets, they cut the top and bottom part of the 4:3 image feed only, so they are zoomed in.

Depends on the TV. It'll look fine of a 720p/1080i display.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

After getting my wii games and wiimote+nunchuck I must say its not that bad! so I am pleasantly surprise, probably because I didnt expect too much.

So you are saying 720p was actually better than 1080p for wii games?

The thing is, I still own one of those HDready tvs that can only display 720p (or 1080i if you will). I was thinking about a new TV for next christmas... of course full hd this time round. So I guess it wouldnt be too wise to get rid of the old 720p tube? Right?

I've heard it's bad with 1080p, but I don't really know first hand. My Wii has been hooked up to a 720 DLP display its whole life.

For me, Xenoblade has better-looking environments, but worse-looking character models. You get used to it pretty fast, though.

Other games, like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3, look fantastic.

Basically to put this as short as possible, the Wii U upscales in the same way your tv would when it gets a non HD signal. There's nothing special happening to make the image look better, thus the higher you go up on resolution, the more noticeable the lower definition of the game is.

I think an HD version would be lovely, but I wouldn't hold out hope. You will find it a bit jarring after Wii U visuals, but after playing for a bit you should adjust - worked for me with No More Heroes, which was jag-city!

I recently played a couple of Wii games after a year of exclusive Wii U gaming (in 720p). I was pretty disappointed with the visuals, but that was probably in comparison to staring at the gorgeous WindWaker HD and Captain Toad for so long. I'm sure Xenoblade will look fine.

As I dont have too much experience with full 1080p televisions, is it possible to have a 1080p television adjusted to 720p output? Would that make sense in regard to wii games? or is it better to keep the old tv as long as it lasts?

I pretty much agree with what others have said, in some ways it looks better, but in others it looks worse. Xenoblade looks sharper and the colors pop a little more, but it looked extremely pixelated. I'm not sure if it's foggy memory or an issue with the emulator, but I don't remember it looking so jagged. Once you get past that, it's still the same great game and worth playing.

Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.
