The PS3 had a disastrous launch among all the false claims (where is my 4D 120 fps Kaz) and absurd price tag.

Good point, I got my PS3 at launch (big mistake) and I didn't use it much until I got LittleBigPlanet (I got it in June 2009 I think) and Call of Duty a little big later (also a very big mistake).
I basically didn't heavily use my PS3 until 2.5 years later. Same thing is happening with my Wii U right now, except I'm going to play much more once I get Pikmin 3!

I think Pikmin 3's sales spike was very short lived in Japan and I can't imagine it being any different in the West, as good as it looks pikmin really isn't one of Nintendo's most well known franchises.

I agree - Pikmin 3 is not going to be THE system seller, but it will serve to kick off Nintendo's 1st-party lineup of at least one title per month. So, perhaps to be a bit of a skeptic, I don't expect to see any huge bumps for the system in August, but I do think there will be lots of movement the further we get into the Fall, especially if Wonderful 101 turns out to be an excellent game.

True, but Pikmin 3 is the ONLY reason I got my Wii U pretty early (March), but I wasn't expecting a delay
Either way, if Pikmin 3 wasn't announced for this year i wouldn't have a Wii U right now!

The system sellers are of course going to be Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros. 4, and maybe even the new Zelda game when it's finally announced

Actually despite the price tag.. the PS3 came out when the VG industry was still rising.. and had strong brand loyalty... by all rights and purposes it should have launched at 1 million sold or went there close to launch.. the fact that it didn't shows how much of a failure it was.. The Wii U.. has a small game library and a high price tag... the fact that it got to a million when the industry is actually falling... because of other forms of technology is actually really good.. especially when you consider it only has about 2 fresh apps that are must haves... and the rest of the line up can be largely ignored..

That is actually a really good point. Video game sales were still extremely high when ps3 came out and are falling while Wii U is getting out there.
