Nintendo would have announced achievements if achievements existed. It's a big feature. Nintendo's not a stupid company. Only stupid companies leave big features off major marketing campaigns. E3 is a major marketing campaign.
I hope you all see the logic train going on here. Because this thread is only marginally better than "the moon landing was faked" right now with all the faux analysis going on from one picture.
.........
"See other players' accomplishments while you play"
What more needs to be said? All that's missing is a gamerscore which I would say is the least important bit of the feature so I think "achievements" are more than close enough to what has been confirmed for this convo to be over

You can see my accomplishments right now as I play my 3DS. All I need to do is update me friends message to say "I beat KIU" BAM! Accomplishment.
That's not an achievements system, though, and you and I know that.
I would be more inclined to guess that Nintendo's implemented a way to share gameplay data (time spent playing the game, whether you've finished it or not) with one another. Which is different enough to be interesting, social and rewarding enough to be as engaging as an achievements system, and I would be all for that. It's also an extension of the existing activity logs on the Wii and 3DS, so it makes more sense than a copy of the PS/ Xbox system.
Their examples were a lot more "achievement" like than just completion, time spent and what games you are playing and it wasn't just a message system. They specifically pointed out things like all three star coins in one run, zero damage taken and the one in the picture is a speed run. So sounds pretty much identical to the "traditional" achievement type stuffs
can see them talking about "comments and accomplishments" in this vid starting @ ~6:20: http://youtu.be/j1vqyYIKFsU
Whether/if/how the system works outside of the game will be interesting but it's definitely an achievement like system.
I believe achievements ARE on the way from a lot of small nods during E3. However, whether, it will be as streamlined as it's competitors existing systems only time will tell.
So from what I've been, Nintendo's idea of "achievements" for the Wii U is the same as that from the 3DS. So I was right - activity log, but no universal gamerscore.
That plus friend codes? Dear God, Nintendo, have you learned NOTHING about online?

I hope Wii U won't get the achievement system. I'm really, really OCD about 100%-ing games, and I can see difficult or tedious achievements ruining my gaming experience.

Exactly, I already have trouble 100% ing games and achievements would make it worse, especially for ones that involve No Deaths and a specific amount of deaths in the same game as 2 different achievements

So turn them off. There's no sense in wanting everyone else to miss out on their fun, though.
My first impressions from these screenshots is that there are "accomplishments" throughout games that you can 'tweet' through the miiverse to your friends or the public as the proper bragging rights that achievements are supposed to be. But instead of being on a profile that you can view, it's rather in a chat in that yellowish text that you choose to post or not post to people who actually understand what that accomplishment is because they have the game.
Which in my view is much better, especially when a lot of achievements these days are trivial things like 'launch game' or 'fiddle with options' and it doesn't have to be considered part of a completionist mentality because these can be more numerous and both impressive and inconsequential.
The problem I believe people had with the Wii version, I told Fils-Aime, is that adults who owned the system felt like, hey, if I'm an adult, treat me like an adult and let me friend people I've met online without having to call a person and exchange a code or something like that. "Agreed," Fils-Aime said.
"You feel like those people will be happier?" I asked.
"Yes, they will be."
I don't have a problem with that. If they keep codes for whatever arbitrary reason but have it unified (like the 3DS) and remove the "here's my friend code can I have yours" dance then that's all I want. It might be ridiculous to do it that way but I couldn't care less about the extra advantages doing it exactly the same way that everyone else does.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
Great that there are no achievements, they suck. And from Reggie's latest interview, it seems that if there is some kind of friends codes, they'd be harmless.
That's good meaning we won't get forced half aced achievements for stuff we are going to do eventually. Reach level 3, pause the game, defeat the first boss.
So wait, the Activity Log is confirmed to be back? That'd be great, especially if you could look at your friend's logs too. I love that feature in the 3DS and Wii.
I have Steam and never cared for achievements. So, WiiU lacking it, don't care. I do like how you can share your accomplishments right in the game through Miiverse. And there's that "Beat this level" thing in New Super Mario Bros. U
As for an achievement system, such a thing has existed a long time before Xbox Live. Kirby's Air Ride, for example, had challenges that carried to Kid Icarus Uprising and Brawl. It's not the same like Live's achievements system where you can see and compare, but it's still there and frankly, more rewarding to me as it unlocks content and not just 50 points.
EDIT: Cool how Nintendo gives developers the option for achievements compared to Microsoft's philosophy of enforcing such a trivial thing.
