Topic: Hint at achievements on the Wii U?

Maybe nobody else caught this, and maybe I'm wrong, but I think there was a hint at an achievement system in the Nintendo Direct video! When Iwata is introducing the Mii-verse, they showed footage of what people were saying, or had recently posted. One of the comments clearly said, "999 coins, only 1 more to go!" Now what reason would there be to be excited about getting your 1000th coin outside of an achievement? For that matter, why would the game track your total coins at all if there wasn't some goal? Sure, there could be some other reason, but none seems more reasonable than achievements!

You're reading into that way too much. Some people are obsessive like that and some games demand that sort of obsessive collecting. Maybe the person was in the middle of some challenge level in the next big Mario and they only had one more purple coin to get. Maybe it was something like Donkey Kong Country and collecting special coins in each level unlocked new areas or whatever.

Could be lots of reasons for it and it is just a mockup so maybe they just thought of some made up gamey thing to put on there for their made up games.

Just look at how generic it is

A game with a boo icon and someone saying "Great for parties. Upto 5 people can play!"? Really? A Star, Yoshi, Mario, Metroid, Hylian Shield and DK barrel? That picture is mockup central. Hell, there's also a gun there to represent "generic third party FPS".

Maybe you're reading too little into it. Your theory, that the next Mario could have 1000 purple coins at once, is even more unbelievable than achievements. I had already considered that, and having 1000 collectable comet coins, or just about any collectable for that matter, is pretty unheard of.

Even if they did just stick some "gamey" text in the bubble, they chose to use text that sounds like a player is about to reach a special milestone.

649 Pokemon? in game currency?...... seriously it smells of generic gamey text in a mockup

....... however your theory in general may well be correct but not from where you said it was

again a mockup however there is gold text that highlights the achievement rather than simply someone typing it. That's your hint.

It's a little hard to compare Pokemon, an RPG, to Mario, a platformer. Also, how often have coins mattered in side-scrolling Mario games other than getting a life? Suddenly the game is keeping track of your total coins, and there's some sort of goal, a pretty high one too? That would definitely be new, and certainly sounds like an achievement to me.

Though I agree the time trial pic could refer to an achievement, I saw it in the video, and passed it over because Nintendo has done time trials in their games for years. If the Wii U has achievements, then it might be one, but time trials would probably still be there even if there weren't any achievements. I've yet to think of a reasonable explanation for a game tracking your coin collecting, and being excited about the 1000th coin, however.

Although a counter-argument could be that if achievements were being incorporated, surely Iwata's presentation just now would have been the perfect time to announce them, along with all the seeing-what-your-friends-are-up-to stuff.

You could just say "yeah that makes sense" instead of trying to discredit my discovery while still clinging onto yours. As I said, the stuffs shown looks like a set of mockups (how cheesy is "Great for parties! Upto 5 people can play". Nobody would ever say that) so I wouldn't read into the words too much. It just seems like a generic thing that someone might say in a game.

It cost 9999 pokedollars (or something) to get a Porygon in the first Pokemans. It cost something like 999 Rupees to get the magic armour in Twilight Princess. Maybe the person had been collecting coins in whatever game they were playing and were one short of the amount they needed. Maybe it's the Wii U's Mario Kart and collecting coins is the way to unlock extra kart parts like it is in Mario Kart 7. Collecting 1000 coins is not that crazy a task that it MUST be an achievement. And anyways if it's in the game as an achievement it could well be in the game without it and someone might brag about it.

I don`t care if people brag or don`t brag about achievements... Look, you can like them or dislike them. But even if you dislike, why would somebody be pissed if they are included. I personally don`t really collect them as much, but I am happy when I get something like: "defeat this side boss" in Final Fantasy or something... Plus achievements are a good track of your gaming history on your system. On my 360 for example, I can just scroll down and see every single game I played this generation.
It`s not the end of the world, if they aren`t there, but it doesn`t hurt anybody if they are there. Plus, competitors have it and why would they fall behind on this feature, which is so easy to include. Because remember, there are people, who like to get achievements and they will certainly find it as a minus, if they are not included. If you don`t care about them, fine. They won`t bother you if they are there or not.

Like I said, the time trial thing could very well be an achievement. I'm just saying that time trials, and getting special marks for them, are nothing new to Nintendo. They would have them whether or not there were achievements.

"You could just say "yeah that makes sense" instead of trying to discredit my discovery"
Do I need to point out the irony that you came to this thread and tried to discredit my discovery, despite it being far from farfetched? Like I said, I noticed the time trial award in the video, but it seemed to be little different than something you would get without achievements. I'm not saying it's not an achievement though.

"It cost 9999 pokedollars (or something) to get a Porygon in the first Pokemans. It cost something like 999 Rupees to get the magic armour in Twilight Princess"
Again, you're making invalid comparisons. Both poke-currency and rupees are frequently collected in bunches, while coins in Mario are almost always collected 1 coin=1 coin.

"Maybe it's the Wii U's Mario Kart and collecting coins is the way to unlock extra kart parts like it is in Mario Kart 7."
It might be comparable to Mario Kart 7's system. I think you need to collect 20,000 coins to get every part in that game. However, those hard-to-get parts for your kart (and stars by your name) are basically the achievements of Mario Kart.
Edit: It's definitely not the Wii U's Mario Kart. That icon is above and to the left of the Mario icon this phrase came from, clearly distinguished by the presence of a kart.

"And anyways if it's in the game as an achievement it could well be in the game without it and someone might brag about it"
That's true. It could be an in-game achievement of sorts.

That's entirely possible, but what's strange is the apparently built-in coin-counter. I don't remember other Mario games having one of those. If such a feature has been added to the game, there's a good chance it has a purpose. It could be for in-game achievements, an overall achievement system, or it could really just be there for the fun of it. As I said in the title, I just thought the phrase could hint towards achievements, and I still think it does.

You don't own the thread you create bro. I just pointed out a list of possible reasons why what you said could be wrong, no need to get so defensive about it.
