So I finally got my wii u. Had my trusty wii for 7 years now and felt that, seeing as my 2 year old son decided to to stuff 2 discs into the wii and break the drive, I should upgrade.
I have a couple of questions. Sorry to sound like a noob but:
How do I transfer my 'account' from wii to wii u? I havent used the wii for ages but i downloaded plenty of games so I must have some kind of account. Do i need to retain this? Can I start a new account?

Also how do I transfer my wii downloads to wii u??? I hear you need an SD card but what memory would you need on the card? All my downloads are VC games.

Many Thanks in advance!!!

Just one more thing...when setting up my online account, should i be using my old wii 16 digit number to sign up ie transferring my old account over or starting with a new one on the wii u????

help appreciated

The Wii Transfer tool takes care of the Wii Shop account transfer for you. Only content in your Wii's flash memory will be tansferred so make sure you've got as many games and save data in there as possible because as noted no games copied to SD from your old machine will work - you'll have to redownload them from Wii mode. Basically don't second-guess it or you'll just waste a lot of time, launch the thing and follow the prompts!

This is why I really like the way everything is slowly moving away from disks. Less things that they can notice, attempt to copy and then shove things into. And instead they'll just hand you a remote and ask you to put Frozen/Nemo on. I have four nieces, two of them under 4 and one with Autism. I can relate

Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year
"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

I don't believe that was part of the transfer process. You can use your own details (nickname, password etc.) when creating an account on your Wii U. You can also link your Club Nintendo account (if applicable) to your Nintendo Network ID (NNID). While you may need to redownload your Wii Shop software (as I did back when I bought my Wii U), all of your save data will be retained. If you, however, decide to purchase the upgraded Wii U versions of your Virtual Console software, the save data will not be transferred to the Wii U version. On the plus side, every profile on your Wii U will have their own independent save data for your Virtual Console games, and you will be able to use restore points with them (i.e. saving and loading at any time).

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

Yeah it should be mentioned if you didn't know already that once you do the transfer your virtual console games will only be accessible by booting in to virtual Wii mode and using a classic controller plugged in to a wii remote(hopefully you have one and were not using a gamecube controller) and they will be gone from your old wii.

Also once you do the transfer if the same virtual console title is also available for Wii U you can purchase the Wii U version for a discounted price $1 for NES game and $1.50 for SNES games. The Wii U version lets you access the game in Wii U mode, gives you all Wii U controller options and allows button mapping, and gives you access to save states.

The process is totally automatic but really slow. Just make sure not to turn off your system while transferring.

The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
