So I have a Nintendo Wii U. I love it and it's a very nice system. Lately though it's been gathering dust and hardly gets played. I have been going back and forth with the idea about trading it in and getting the NN3DS. It's got a huge library of games and it's got the portability I like as well.
But on the other hand, the Wii U has some amazing games coming out soon. I don't know if having a system just laying around justifies the wait for a few games that I might pick up later.
My wife and I are playing on doing more traveling this summer and it would be nice to be able to use play while on the road or in a plane. I just don't want to give up on a system that I know has potential but also I want the portability and I was given a choice by my wife to either trade in the Wii U for the 3DS or keep the Wii U. We can't spend money on a new system as we are saving for traveling. I know this boils down to a personal choice but I was just wondering what the community thought and would like some input.

Honestly you answered your own question. If you are going to find yourself using the 3DS more and get more enjoyment out of it then I say trade in the Wii U. By the time the games come out for the Wii U that you want to play you can probably find a used Wii U for a lower price then a new one.

Yeah I figured I did answer my own question lol but I hate getting rid of game systems. I still have my original 64 I got new. Oh well. I'm still sticking to a Nintendo product though so that makes me happy! Cheers!
Really, it's your own choice and it depends on what games you're interested in, but there is a great library for the Wii U as is. Yes, there's some great games coming this year, but are there any games out now that interest you?
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)

I agree after getting rid of my N64 years ago for a Gamecube I never trade a system in anymore (unless its to upgrade like from a 360 to a 360 slim model for example). I mean honestly I was about to say just keep the Wii U and buy the 3DS but then you said you can't do that financially wise. So right now it would probably to be best to get the one you will use more right now.

As much as I love my 3DS, I'm definitely more of a home console guy, and as such wouldn't consider making such a trade if I were in your shoes (especially because, as you said yourself, the Wii U's lineup for this year looks truly stellar).
That said, if you think you'd get more enjoyment out of the 3DS, by all means go for it. You certainly won't lack awesome games to play.
I have a Wii U since launch (also have a 3DS though) and I haven't stopped playing it. Not sure what games you have but I am pretty sure that if you check for available games you should be able to find something you like so it does not gather dust while you wait for this year's games. There are a lot of gems that seem to go unnoticed to Wii U owners, both in retail and on the eShop. Scram Kitty and the Wonderful 101 are just two examples.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Yeah, it really comes down to personal preference. I'm with Ricklongo, I much prefer Nintendo's home console games over handheld, but I understand everyone likes different things and is in a different financial situaiton. The reason I hate selling stuff though is because you usually get so little money for it...and I usually want it back later...to be bought at a higher price T_T. It's a horrible cycle that I've luckily been able to remedy with a decent job.
I have a Wii u, and I play it every day, even more than my ps4. I'm not a portable console kind of person though, but if you travel a lot, I say get the New 3ds. Although I personally think the 3ds is going to get phased out very soon. I'm a home console guy though, so I'd trade my barely played 3ds in a heartbeat.

Well, if you can do it, keep the Wii U and get a N3DS. That is what I would do, even if I had to save for a month. That way your covered on all fronts. Its easy to think, I don't use it, but as soon as its gone, and something pops up, you'll wish you had it.
Just my opinion, but only you know whats best for you.
So I traded in my wii u, games, controllers, and a charging station to Gamestop. I ended up with 395 in trade in value! I was pretty excited considering I was only expecting to get maybe enough for the 3ds and a used game but nope I had plenty more. Sooooooo, here is were you all are going to hate me, I ended up getting the Xbox One. It came with the master chief collection download, ac black flag and unity download, Rayman legends, an independent game and mine craft. I got a year of live and still ended up with 7 bucks in trade credit, so I came out pretty good I feel like even though it's not a Nintendo product but I still do plan to grab a 3ds some time in the future!

No shame in having an X1. I own one. I also own a PS4. I usually get the exclusives only on the PS4. I have a rather large Friend list on the Xbox so I play mostly there when it comes to the non Nintendo side of things.
One thing to consider in the future is actually just selling your stuff outright. It takes a bit more time but you can clear a lot more money in the end, even with fees associated with something like ebay.
Black Flag is great, Unity, not so much. The Master Chief Collection will get you current on the main storyline. The online is still not up to snuff if you ask me. Rayman Legends is probably one of the best, if not the best 2D platformer ever. (Could of played that one on the Wii U, and you probably did.) Careful of the minecrack. Some are more susceptible than others. lol
If you like shooters, pick up Wolfenstein, love that game. Since you go to gamestop, you can pretty much buy it used and if you don't like it return it. Gamestop is pretty good for free rentals, as long as you buy used.
Other notable games that you were unable to play are the obvious ones like Dragon Age: Inquisition, GTA 5, Far Cry 4 and perhaps a little less popular but great fun for me, Lords of the Fallen (Plays like Dark Souls.)
You also got the Borderlands Collection coming up, or whatever they named it. Of the two in the collection the first one was a really great game. It is however, either your thing, or it isn't. I find the humor to my liking.
Surprised you went with a home console when you cited needing portability though.
EDIT: Also got Final Fantasy Type-0 coming up, which gives you access to the Final Fantasy XV demo, if that is your kind of thing.
EDIT 2: Oh yeah, forgot to mention my most anticipated game for the early part of this year. The Witcher 3.
or
Or just search the game on youtube. I am very excited.
Sorry you couldn't swing keeping your Wii U at the same time though. There is a lot of fun to be had on both sides of the fence.

Bad decision. Would have kept the Wii U and saved up for the NN3DS if I were you - but I guess everyone has their own in their universe. I love both my Wii U and NN3DS, though I would probably say I spend more time on my NN3DS as the games on that have a longer life for me than the Wii U - but damn, there are gonna be some good games coming to Wii U soon!! Zelda U, Xenoblade X, Splatoon... and then the NN3DS, currently MH4U, later Xenoblade 3D, Fire Emblem, Codename STEAM....
Did I tell you how much you're going to be missing out?
Edit: Did you also know that Assassin's Creed Black Flag and Rayman Legends was also on the Wii U?
Ah yes, the Xbox One is amazing. I'd highly recommend this to get the most out of it: http://www.ea.com/eaaccess/
Pay $30 a year and get unlimited access to somewhat new EA games. Just look at all that they have in the vault already.

I wouldn't say it was a bad decision to get an X1. It's a regrettable decision because when all these Wii U/3DS games you may or may not be kicking yourself for getting an X1. Personally after getting a Wii U, I'm too accustomed to the idea of not paying for a subscription to play online or have access to a "vault" for a few games. Since you say you are eventually going to get a 3DS then it's cool because you'll still be in the nintendo fold.

If you regret a past decision/choice surely then, to you, that choice was bad?
