Ok, cool.

I see there's a game download offer for MK8, looks like I'll be registering on Club Nintendo anyway.

So, for a 7 year old who loves Animal Crossing above all else...Nintendoland or New Super Mario Bras. U?

Thanks. I'll do that.

Last hypothetical then.

The WiiU aught to be delivered at the end of the week. If I run a setup using just the MK disc the system is, as of then, as up to date as it can be with no Internet connection with no Mii or NNID set.
Come crimbo (or whenever) her Mii from her 3DS can then be shared and set as the main 'account' for the WiiU?

The Mii can be shared through a local connection between the Wii U and 3DS. Likewise, one can be recreated on the Wii U. Either way, a Mii (can be switched later) is required before a NNID can be created or linked on a system.

If you want to do either (link or create an NNID), you will need a internet connection. Barely any data is used for this process, so one option could be setting up a hotspot via a smartphone. If you nab an NNID with either system, just to put dibs on a username, you can link the other system at a later date. There is really no benefit unless she will be online, playing or purchasing.

Are you willing to play Nintendoland with her? Will friends/siblings? It's great for multiplayer and as a quick arcade-style pick up. My kids love that damn game, but they want to play it EVERY day, it seems. It also requires Wiimotes+ for some games, so that's important to consider. (Most of the solo stuff only needs a Gamepad, though.)

My kids also adore pretty much any Mario game and NSBMU is a good one. It gets tough towards the latter half, but is good for co-op and/or giving someone the touchscreen to make platforms and freeze enemies to help (or hinder) the others. Keeps everyone engaged, at least.

All things considered, Nintendoland may be the better choice. Best to just skip her ahead to Super Mario 3D World at some point, anyway. But what about Wind Waker HD? I tend to think that it could enamor just about any 7 year old. Not too tough, either, and excellent for playing with siblings/parents. I know not all girls are going to give that type of game a chance, but that's silly, because Zelda games are generally great for girls (in my experience). Coming from a parent, I'd say this is an opportunity to influence her while she's young.

Get her New Super Mario Bros. U as she can play by herself and multiplayer whereas Nintendoland isn't nearly as fun playing by yourself.

I would go with Nintendo Land since it honestly uses the Gamepad better than most and the multiplayer is really fun and interesting. Especially if you plan on getting 3D World at any point, since it is universally considered the better, more interesting version of what the NSMB games were doing anyway.

I wouldn't go for Nintendo Land because hard copies are dirt cheap.

Food for thought, I'll probably go with New Super Mario Bros.U, but Pikmin is actually a possibility too.

If you select Pikmin 3, make sure to get a Wiimote+Nunchuck for the system as well, since that (together with the GamePad as the "device") is the superior way to control that game. Or get 2 Wiimotes+Nunchucks to play the brilliant 2-player games in Pikmin 3.
