I got a Wii u yesterday and I am having some trouble. My Tv is Hd and ive plugged in the hdmi cord but the screen turns black whenever I dont use my AV cables. Ive changed the settings to HDMI 1080i (my tv) But it didn't work. Help?
Only WUP-008 HDMI cable would work on Wii U. I've tried other brands, but there was no picture as the Wii U only recognize the cable with aforementioned code.
Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

New Wii U is doing my loaf in. Had to use Wii AV cables to get a tv picture initially. After some attempts, I managed to get a 1080p HDMI signal to work. Next day, I switch the Wii U on again & HDMI won't connect.
I've tried connecting first with AV then change the output settings to HDMI. Gamepad say "Could not load settings. Restart console." Again & again. Sake.
EDIT - Got HDMI to work by changing port in TV. Must be a handshaking issue with my old Samsung. No problems with PS4 though.
I had a problem w/ my Wii U where the picture kept going black for a few seconds every minute or so. It was doing it often enough, and had some other issues, that I sent it in for repair. Afterwards it was happening a lot less frequently and for less time but still happened on occasion, mostly playing Pokemon Rumble U. I then purchased a surround sound system w/ HDMI in and out and the tv never went black again.
So I'm guessing it's a handshake issue w/ the tv as #drewodrew mentioned. Wish I had purchased that sound system before sending my Wii U in for repair, lost all my save files.
Someday we'll find it

HDTVs support firmware upgrades via USB. It's a long shot, but it is technically possible that your HDTV might not be showing an image, because of a bug that they fixed in the firmware. I think it's more common in older HDTVs. Either it's hooked up weird, there's other settings that need to be messed with, or it needs a firmware update(even it's a late update).
There have been other posts about this happening, but firmware was never mentioned, as I recall, so it might be worth a shot. Just search your HDTV model number and see if there is firmware that you can transfer via a USB thumb drive.
have you tried changing the resolution to 720p in the settings menu? if 1080p/i doesnt work, maybe try 720p? i had a 1080i TV that only accepted 720p from the Wii U. maybe the HDMI interface was outdated
