But the Austrailain classifications board routinely bans and censors games for being a joke, games that aren't like Hatred, for being tastless. They banned Saints Row, a game that is a complete joke. It's shows the system fail, and simply restrict freedom.

Well most of the higher ratings in the Australian classification board are different tiers of sex and drug use. Particularly exploitative sex and the promotion of drugs. The highest rating which is the only rating that games can't get here is basically for porn. For some reason with games they're particularly strict on the drugs bit which I think is BS. That's the bit that Saint's Row got caught up in, apparently there was one mission which had the main character take a drug which gave them superpowers. They removed that one mission from the Australian version and it got an MA15+ rating....

I mean sure, it's BS. No disagreement there. But I don't see it being exploited by an unruly government anytime soon. The guidelines are a bit off but it's separated from government and when they make a ruling there's at least a reason for it. Personally I think the R18+ category for games should be a "anything goes" when it comes to things like drugs. At least the classification board didn't ban GTA at any point this time

So you think that if the game used KKK/Nazi euphemisms for genocide and that was the motivation for the protagonist that still wouldn't be "crossing the line"?

No I don't. Because, as I said, I don't accept that there's a line that anyone can reliably discern. Everyone defines this 'line' by whatever THEY happen to dislike. That's the problem. Most people are stupid and have idiotic beliefs. Obviously you're not one of them. But do you really trust a government or any other body of people to decide who has got a legitimate concern and who hasn't? Cos I think it's a recipe for disaster and corruption. Putting ideas to the public test is a far better way of deciding things. Good ideas have historically tended to naturally prosper, whereas bad ideas usually need some kind systematic shortcut (e.g suppressing criticism) in order to survive. If this game happens to survive, it'll be because it exploited our ridiculous outrage culture for free publicity, not because it was a good idea.

I don't foresee myself getting it anytime soon either way, of course. Next year is full of Final Fantasy, Zelda, Xenoblade Chronicles, Metal Gear Solid... why would anyone waste time on this?

Has FF15 definitely been given a 2015 release date?

@Dezzy
The problem with that idea is that when a game like this comes along people support it out of spite not because it's actually any good. Which means that instead of the public collectively making a decision about what is ok and what isn't with their wallets instead a small group will buy into whatever is the most extreme thing. Thus doing the reverse of what you say would happen. Ontop of that there are genuine reasons why something shouldn't be published and I've already explained a few. There's no way to do that without some sort of group that does censor content, every country has something along those lines.

Again, I think worrying about what a classification board or a publisher does is the least of our worries. It's more concerning that there are government agencies actually collecting our data and pushes from various government to control the internet. And frankly I'm less upset about some games being refused classification in Australia than I am about what is happening with The Interview.

Lol, what's happening with The Interview is America is trying to pull a fast one so they can further their project of internet control. North Korea couldn't give two poooopos about a Seth Rogan and James Franco movie, but for some reason the culturally arrogant America can't realize this...

As for Hatred, I will be playing it because I can differentiate fact from fiction. In all honesty, it's a pretty lame game concept, but it does look fun. There's bigger problems in the world than violent video games. Like the fact that children who have predator drones hovering over their countries are now afraid of the sky.

@Zizzy The leader of NK is pretty crazy, he's not reasonable enough to not care. You're giving him too much credit here. It's already possible NK hacked Sony.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.

@Zizzy
North Korea is a nation wide cult where their leader is a god and their people are starving. The idea that it's some sort of US government conspiracy being used in an attempt to grab more power seems a bit absurd. Especially when no government these days seems to need an excuse to grab more power in that domain, they just take it. I think it's much, much, much more likely that North Korea is behind it.

I wouldn't entirely disagree. I mean I have idiotic beliefs like that you should totally play Glover and other likely mediocre N64 titles over most modern shooters, even the well rated ones.

Is that true? So where did your "facts" come from other than some random internet site?

Obviously from some small blog where they analysed the shaddows and found out the whole thing was photo-shopped

ClockworkMario

I'm a tad late for the party, but here's my two cents anyway. Or heck I'm not that cheap, take a whole dollar!

Let's say there're two fellows, Aethertrail and McBan, and GTA V comes along with the usual set of sex, hooker murdering and some mix of the former. McBan goes berserk: this game has violated everything that's sacred to him! It's poisoning the youth! This blasphemy must be banned at once! Aethertrail, however, ignores these arguments as laughable. It's just a video game, no harm done.

Then Hatred pops up, and Aethertrail is flabbergasted. Oh the humanity, what horror! You can't just make a game about murdering innocent! This can't be tolerated in any way. Though as he thinks these thoughts, an air of hypocrisy flows around him. What gives him the right to judge this game, to decide where to draw the line over McBan? Isn't this just two sets of values and worldviews clashing, a subjective debate, where the lines are drawn in sand?

I won't ever purchase Hatred, nor do I think it's a good idea. I'm not siding with the unlimited free speech, either, but let's have some faith in humans and let them decide whether they are the odd sort who enjoys something like Hatred. Should Steam stock this? Well, they have the right to create their own set of rules. Though the more it seems like Hatred is being suppressed by The Man, the more people will buy it purely out of spite.

Currently on the plate:
Mount and Blade: Warband – Napoleonic Wars
Chivalry
Super Mario 3D World – Finishing the last few levels.
Mario Kart 8

People only do it out of "spite" to resist the liberal thought-police. If a game like this was announced and there WASN'T massive moralistic outrage, no-one would be defending it and almost no-one would buy it. This is just the story of GTA in microcosm.
You can't just blame 1 half of that equation. People naturally push back against political viewpoints they don't want to be given free reign. That's exactly what people should do, no matter what the issue. Otherwise we fall into a situation where whoever cares enough to shout the loudest gets the biggest input.

I'd suggest you're criminally underestimating how many people enjoy blunt and outspoken rudeness.
