Topic: Guess we're gonna get Eternal Darkness HD (or a GC VC release) in 3 years or so.

Who's to say Retro Studios, or Next Level isn't making an Eternal Darkness game? After all, Miyamoto hinted at Retro having more than 1 title in the works, and Next Level, who claim themselves as "ones who can revive old Nintendo Franchises" (with games like Punch Out, and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon) have also stated that they are on the works of another Nintendo IP.
Silicon Knights are not Bankrupt as far as I know. But then again, nothing has been said from them after a major lawsuit with Epic Games.

I think at this point they'll just let it expire. Didn't the original developer go bankrupt or something?

They have attempted to make a sort of sequel twice on kickstarter and have failed both times.

@Warruz: That wasn't Silicon Knights, that was Precursor. Both were founded by Dennis Dyack through.

I doubt it.

The lack of interest in regards to the numerous failed crowd funding attempts for an ED sequel certainly didn't go unnoticed by Nintendo.

ACK

Crowd-funding should not necessarily be used to gauge market interest in a product. (Lest we forget the lessons of the Ouya...)

Precursor had an uphill battle, regardless of interest in the ED franchise. They had so little to show and blew their whole wad up front. The only noteworthy figurehead linked to the project was toxic. On top of all this, they communicated their vision ineffectively. The whole situation was a bit of a fiasco.

Even with my concerns, I supported, which I never, ever do. I wanted to believe, but I just couldn't, even for a moment. It was like you could see Shadow of the Eternals disintegrating into vapor right in front of your eyes. Can't blame anyone for refusing to support it.

Silicon Knights technically still exists, but after the Unreal 3 fiasco there's almost nothing of them left (as of last year there were only five employees left).

I don't expect a sequel. But I see an HD remake. That was the best game I ever played on the gamecube.

Am I wrong in thinking that they just have to do something with the license, as in it doesn't have to be a game?

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

I don't think that failed because people had no interest in Eternal Darkness. I think that failed because people didn't want to line Denis Dyaks' pockets.

But in order to keep the license, can't they just put out a VC release? Heck, a little trophy in Super Smash Bros. may be enough, even.

Yeah, I bet a VC release would do it. And they got three years to do it, so they'll probably release ED on the Wii U's VC three years from now.

Would be great to get HD update of it but I doubt there is a chance

Then again, with Nintendo ignoring some of their most succesful and beloved franchises, why would they suddenly care about a title such as Eternal Darkness?

Losing an IP and ignoring an IP are two different things, if Eternal Darkness 2 went and become a huge hit on another console then it would raise questions in the board room where as something like Metroid or Star Fox wil sooner or later get another game.

I always wanted to believe that the eShop would open up huge possibilities for remakes, ports or lower-key-releases and fan / cult favourites. I feel so stupid right now.

I bought a Gamecube last weekend and Eternal Darkness as well, it's in the mail for delivery. I did this because I had lost hope of any iteration of Eternal Darkness coming to Wii U, but as I ordered ED I said to myself "Watch them release an HD / VC version now." ..then I see this, heh. Oh well. It's one of my all time favorite games.

@Futurealphamale One reason there was a huge lack of interest in the kickstarter was because of Dennis Dyack. Nobody trusts him and word of mouth really hurt this campaign. I didn't fund it because it felt shady, not to mention, the game didn't look NEARLY as good as the original. If Nintendo would wake up and give it to someone who would do it justice, it would be an instant buy. I talked a friend of mine out of backing it as well. That wasn't the ED sequel we deserved. We need a Nintendo exclusive. Not a wanna-be ED on every console.

We're either getting an HD remake or a VC re-release. I doubt there will be a sequel because it would be far too much work. There is always a chance that Nintendo did step in and were the reason the Kickstarters were pulled but I suspect it has more to do with the fact that Denis Dyack has a reputation as a code stealing complainy-pants. It really pisses me off when people don't show interest in the original game or the potential for a sequel. It was such a good game. It didn't sell brilliantly but I reckon it would sell more now because Nintendo have a better hype train than they did in the GC era. Now that Nintendo are doing DLC they could do the HD remake and keep the story going with DLC.....

@Spuratis Last year, I started a file of Wind Waker to play with my niece and within a month they announced WWHD. I tried it with F-Zero GX and loads of N64 VC games like Majora's Mask but still waiting on them

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

@Nintenjoe64 I'm actually playing F-Zero GX right now, I'm at the Grand Prix in story mode. I bought that with the Gamecube as well as Viewtiful Joe.
Majora's Mask is my favorite console Zelda game and I've been holding off playing it for a while hoping there'd be an HD release.. maybe I should just cave, hook up the 64, and throw it in and with our combined efforts of trying to summon their HD counterparts, it will happen.
