I'd say get it if there are at least 3 games that you want to play. I currently only own NintendoLand and Super Mario 3D World for the system. The gamepad is probably the best part of the console for me, and with multiplayer it just adds so many possibilities. The problem is, as always, the lack of good games though - and if there isn't enough to make the purchase worth it, then don't get it. The VC is also pretty terrible on the Wii U, seeing as how slow its actually being considering there are already hundreds of titles on the Wii VC.

I currently want to play 5+ titles (new super Mario u, new luigi u, tropical freeze, Mario Kart 8, smash bros, and a few on vc. I wish I could give it a test run but I trust Nintendo

Skip Super Mario U/Luigi U and go for Super Mario 3D World instead. That one is a true masterpiece. Rayman Legends also is better than Mario U/Luigi U (and Rayman Legends is generally considered to be better on Wii U than on the ported platforms).

@DarkJediMasterX Have you heard about the indie support on the WiiU?

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

Is colors 3D on the Wii U? I definitely love drawing.

Nah, but you might want to check out Art Academy Sketchpad.

Can't really say much about the Wii U since so far i've only really found the time to play New Super Mario Bros. U, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Nintendo Land (in co-op), NES Remix and some demos. They're all great fun in their own way though.

Yes get it. There are some great games (retail and digital) out now. There are great games coming soon (Mario Kart 8 in May). The trick with the Wii U is the experience, not the features. If you look for games to experience rather than complete, I know you can fins great titles

Thank you for replying. I noticed there are a good deal of the retro games that I grew up with on the virtual console and Mario Kart 8 already has my vote! I look for games that have a great experience and play value to them. I mostly play on my Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but I am getting tired of the same stuff and Nintendo always has something new and fresh even if it is a remake.

What could you tell me about the pros and cons about the system and/or features?

If this is your second console purchase(Which it sounds like it is for this gen) then the Wii U is the way to go. There is hours upon hours in Monster Hunter alone.

I have xbox one, 360, and 3ds as well as older systems, but yes if your talking next gen system it's my second purchase I'm not to big into monster hunter but other games yes

I am primarily a PC gamer, so Wii U was my second platform for this Gen and its worked out quite well. Anything 3rd party goes to the PC and I get all my first party Nintendo games also.

Cons:
-The friend system is still pretty meh. Better than Friend Codes, but still needs work. (Doesn't notify you when friends are online)

It notifies you. The Home Button on the GamePad flashes a few times when a friend is online. It flashes several times when someone's calling you on Wii U Chat. It doesn't get in your face like the PS and Xbox notifications, but it's there. Simply hit the Home Button when you see it flash and it will show you who's online.

That's not to say the Friend system is perfect, because it's far from it (it lags behind the 3DS's in my opinion excluding the friend codes), but it does notify you when someone's online.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

If you have Xbox One, it means you won't miss on 3rd party games. So I recommend getting a Wii U. If you do, give The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 a chance.

For me the worst thing is the Gamepad battery life, and they released batteries that make it last longer.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Nintenjoe64

There is no reason not to buy one if you can afford one and want to play it. The only significant drawback I have found is loading times and disc drive noise but they're no worse than early PS360 load times and Nintendo's games are pretty quick to load and very quiet. The VC schedule is appalling and we know nothing concrete after Mario Kart but there's still plenty of games to play.

Lots of people deny the most attractive feature is off-tv play but there is no way I could have played as many games in 2013 without it.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

@R_Champ Sums it up pretty nicely, except that Nintendo doesn't hate online. They just haven't felt that it adds much to any of the games, so far. And I honestly agree. 3D World and Tropical Freeze have the right ki.d of online for their situation. Online speed run leaderboards? replays for anything scoring better than Bronze? Ghost Miis to race against or potentially show you where a secret is hiding? Perfect. Given the nature of these games, I don't fwel online multiplayer would add much to the experience, aside from potentially making Tropical Freeze a $60 game instead of a $50 one. And lj
ike you said, we have Mario Kart and Smash in the near(-ish) future to help sate our online needs. And there will be more.

Great analysis....

I agree that it's a very, very under rated system. No, it's not perfect, but its virtues far outweigh its flaws. One thing that I'm tired of hearing is "the bulky gamepad....." Hog wash. My five year old and his friends play it with no problems. The screen looks pretty sharp too. It's nice to be able to play w/out a TV too. took mine over to my GF's house and her HDMI on her TV was difficult to access b/c it was mounted on the wall, so we just plugged it in and played. And the gamepad is great for surfing, far better than my Galaxy Tab, which is now collecting dust.

Pros:
-Lots of fun games...FINALLY (original and familiar, even indie support is pretty good)
-Many underrated titles amongst those fun games (ZombiU and W101 are MUCH better IMO than critics gave them credit for)
-Great control schemes (Love the gamepad? Great! Don't? Still great because the sweet Wii U Pro controller)
-The drawing program is nice (if you like drawing, it's fun to share on Miiverse)
-Backwards compatibly is nice if you missed out on the Wii or don't want to switch between systems
-Off Screen play/tablet remote control is neat (if you choose/need to use it)
-Online is FREE (and pretty reliable I've found)
-The Internet Browser rocks. It's the first browser on a console I've used regularly because it's easy to use, and you can access it from a paused game/Netflix/etc. Without losing progress. Very cool. Sometimes I just go to Youtube and listen to music through my surround sound.

Cons:
-Power (loading times are a little long between menus)
-AAA Third Party support is pretty bad
-Battery life on the gamepad blows (~3 hours...meh)
-The friend system is still pretty meh. Better than Friend Codes, but still needs work. (Doesn't notify you when friends are online)
-Nintendo still hates online play for the most part. There are plenty of amazing games to play online, but I'm waiting for a game like DK or Mario to have an online option. It's looking like "X", Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros. should help solve this problem though.

Overall, I'd say the Wii U is an extremely underrated system. Everyone is so busy hating on it to actually realize it has a ton of amazing games on it. And even more potential ("X" looks SOOOO much better than any other JRPG announced this gen). If you have the money, are interested in at least five games, and aren't too deterred from the cons I'd say take the plunge. If you do, I hope to see you on Miiverse...just beware of the Smash Bros. board, it's nothing but trolls and flame baiters.

I don't think he was accounting for handhelds. I know I wasn't. No disrespect intended to the almighty 3Dees. The Wii U is the best 8th gen home console to get as of now. Happy?

PRO

  • you don't need a tv screen to play games
  • nice hd graphics, improved a lot when compared to wii
  • I personally like the gamepad, it adds to the experience (though not everyone agrees)
  • has some great games that kept me going for 60+ hours
  • miiverse, internet,...
  • less expensive than PS4 and XBOX1
  • I got the deluxe version and when I download a game, I get points, whenever I have 500 points I get 5 euros to spend on the eshop. The 500 points are reached pretty fast imo.

CON

  • third party support, other developers backing off is kinda worrying me
  • small memory, I'm afraid I'll have to buy a memory card cause I can't keep downloading anymore
  • very poor virtual console offer but in April they'll start offering GBA games so this will work out maybe
  • battery is what annoys me the most, it only lasts for a few hours (I think 3), I almost play with the adapter in it all the time

GBA support, heck ya!
Definitely loving the pros!
The third party doesn't bother me since I will be able to play them on my Xbox One.
They sell external hard drives for the Wii U so I might get one of those in the current future.
Yeah that battery life is going to suck.....any way around it?

If you like the games then grab the Wii U for sure.

Other console issues:
gamepad battery life can be solved by spending some money.

Nyko makes 2 excellent products for this
1) The U boost which is an external battery that clips on to the outside of the gamepad. It creates a little bulk but it is way better than having to plug in to keep playing. Also you can very easily put it on as needed and remove it whenever its not. You can actually play till your gampad is low on battery, put your U boost on to keep playing, then when the U boost battery is dead and your gamepad has a nice charge you can take it back off and charge the Uboost while you are playing. By doing this you can nearly indefinitely extend your playing time without needing to plug in your gamepad.
2) The Power Pak. Initially this product had some issues when released but they have all been ironed out and Nyko stands behind there products with excellent customer service. (when my initial one had issues they sent me a free U boost and USB charging cable on top of sending me a working Powerpak all with out even having to return my faulty power pak). This is a replacement battery and it is a BEAST! It has more capacity than Nintendos extended battery. I play with my gamepad on full brightness/sound/rumble and this monster lasts around 9 hour it seems, I am extremely happy with it. If you keep getting interrupted and charge whenever your not playing than it is even longer. Having this also allows you to keep your original battery as a fully charged spare. This is a user servicable part and will not void your warranty but you do have to use the included screw driver to open the battery door.

Battery issues are a thing of the past for me with these products which I basically got all for free since Nyko was so generous in fixing there defective product I was able to return the Powerpak to gamestop for a full refund and got the Uboost, USB charging cable, and Powerpad all for free. Great products that I would highly recommend.

Save games:
The console has no normal way to back up your saved games or to take them to another console to continue where you left off. very annoying.

Controller support:
The Wii U often forces you to use the gamepad for no good reason. This can be annoying when accessing system settings, Netflix, the eshop, or when needing to enter a log in password.

Wii mode:
Unfortunately the great Off TV Wii mode could be improved. It is greatly annoying when using HDMI that the Wii U forces you to change your TV input just to select OK and turn your TV off. It is also a little annoying the buttons on the gamepad only give you a message that you can't use them when playing Wii.

Virtual Console:
Way less games than the Wii had that are barely trickling with some random sparse releases every couple of weeks.

Surround Sound:
Only high end/ newer systems can play surround sound on the system. Surround Sound is only through HDMI (no coax, RCA, or TOSlink)and does not supporty any of the normal formats such as Dolby whatever or DTS and only supports full uncompressed audio. If you set it to surround with out the proper equipment you can really screw up your game audio and must instead set the Wii U to stereo sound.
