Just setup MK8 bundle and download Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart and noticed whilst playing on the TV that the screen was on showing exactly the same as the TV so i was looking for an option to turn off the screen whilst playing on the TV as it is distracting in a darkened room a bright light coming form your lap and its a complete waste of battery,

Yoshi

From the Wii U Menu, press the HOME Button.
Tap "Controller Settings" on the left.
Underneath the Wii U GamePad Settings tap "Display Off."
Tap "Display Off" again to confirm.
Press any button on the Wii U GamePad to turn the display back on.

In Wii Mode, push and hold the power button on the Gamepad to turn the display off. This will not turn your Wii U off.

Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.

Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)

But how does that help i'd be using the gamepad to play the game on the TV and by the sounds of it when i touch the gamepad the screen comes back on.

Well thats official then this is the first thing im not liking abut the Wii U that is plain idiotic, if the game only mirrors whats on the TV then the player should be able to select either one of the screens or both screens, in a day and age where phones/tablets biggest drain is the screen and Nintendo do this.

or you can...
turn on your wii u with a pro controller and put the gamepad out of range/in lead box/follow step 2.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

Can't really argue with it given that you get a choice in Wii Mode if you want to mirror on the Gamepad. Fact is VC isn't the only thing that does this: MK8 streams the after-race highlights to TV and Gamepad.

You could try playing with a controller other than the Gamepad as suggested and turn off the display. I sometimes use a Wii Remote or Classic Controller myself. I do find myself playing VC games on the Gamepad alone when I want to pick up a quick game more than I would have thought. I expect this to happen more now there's a Quick Menu option.
