That was the first thing I thought of so I can see where he doesn't want to take it back to the retailer.

If you read my 1st post i described exactly what you should do. If you're not going to do that then just pay Nintendo to repair your console (Which fyi is much cheaper than 180 Euros), that way you keep all your data etc.
