Topic: Gamepad High-Capacity Battery & Wii Remote Rapid Charging Set

Hi everybody,

Wind Waker wasn't the only thing Nintendo released yesterday because a couple of new accessories came out as well!

First is a new powered up battery for the Gamepad which the Nintendo website says lasts for up to 8 hours as opposed to 3-5 hours with the standard battery so it's quite a big improvement, and it also comes with a little screwdriver for the Gamepad which is very nice of them!

The second accessory is the long awaited release of an official rechargeable battery kit for the Wii Remote, wahoo! It comes with a special Wii Remote Jacket (I'm not sure what the difference is), a wrist strap, a charging cradle and unexpectedly a 3DS charger so obviously the cradle must use it.

Here's the page on the Nintendo website http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Wii-U/Hardware-Features/Accessories...

What does everybody think of these? I'm keen on getting the Wii Remote battery set as long as it's less than £40.

Edit: Thanks to MonocledMetroid we now know that the Wii Remote battery set is out in America and on the Nintendo Online Store it costs $40.

The special Wii remote cover probably has holes in it to allow the metal contacts from the battery back to touch the charging cradle I'm guessing. I have no idea what it looks like though so I could be wrong.

I'm going to buy the gamepad battery as soon as possible, but I'm not so sure about the Wii remote charger yet. I would like to have a stand that could charge all four remotes at once, or two at the least. I have six, so while I'm using four with friends, I could charge the other two, and swap them out as needed. But it's nice to have a first party re-charger now! I've had bad experiences with third party ones

Edit: Even something like this would be ideal (in first party form of course!): http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Remote-Charger-Rechargeable-Battery...

DOUBLE edit: Also, are these available in the US yet?

I've just had a look at the US Nintendo website and they're not on the Wii U accessories page so I assume they're not out in America yet which is unusual because you usually get stuff before us!

Your suggestion about having a cradle that charges multiple remotes at a time is a good point, that would certainly be very handy. You could buy four of these official Rapid Charging Sets of course so that you've got a battery and a cradle for each controller but I expect that would cost a fortune!

Has anybody seen how much these cost yet?

I don't really have a need for the Wii remote charger(although it looks nice). I have an Energizer 15 minute charger with a set of AA batteries for everything I own that uses AAs.

Not only does it charge faster, but I can use it for more things. This probably works how the GamePad and 3DS do(where you just set it down to charge when not in use), which is awesome, but it's also expensive and only comes in black.

I'd say if you don't already have rechargeable batteries, or don't mind mismatching colors, then this might be a good deal.

EDIT: I'm definitely getting the better GamePad battery, though.

@MonocledMetroid Thanks very much for sharing that I forgot about the online shop, we don't have one of those in the UK. I'll edit the first post with this info.

@SCAR392 That sounds like a very good battery setup you have there, I wish I had a rechargeable battery for every single AA powered thing I have! Out of interest, how long do they last in a Wii Remote compared to ordinary alkaline batteries?

On another note I had the idea to look on Nintendo's Japanese website to see if it had the prices because both the Wii Remote set and the Gamepad battery were released in July in Japan. Luckily it does have them and the price of the Gamepad battery is 3150 Yen which is £20.24/$32.41 so that seems quite reasonable.

@Squashy
Each pair of AA batteries lasts at least 10 hours, I think. I haven't really kept track, but I have the rumble on and they still last pretty long. Rayovac rechargeables cost $10 at most for 4.
