What are people's thoughts on it so far? Does anyone know if a Japanese version will work with a North American Wii U? Will it get more support in other games?

  • Don't have one so I don't know.
  • My assumption would be yes. It's basically a converter, changing the GC controller's inputs to USB that can be read by the Wii U...or...Smash. However you wish to look at it. It's not like it's reading a disc or memory, which would play into region-locking.
  • I hope so. Actually, the fact that it's not is the reason I decided not to order the adapter and a controller. I might still go get one if I have friends that would like to play with that control option...if I can find one in stock, of course.

I was lucky enough to snag one because I pre-ordered it. Would be nice to have another one for 8 player mayhem. My thoughts on it are that it actually works extremely well. Didn't notice any input lag at all and the build quality is very good. I also thought that the price was about right if a bit on the expensive side, but it was what I expected for price. I hope it gets support with other games though. If it only supports Smash Bros then that effectively made Smash a $104.00 purchase for me, game plus one adapter. That is steep. If it doesn't support any other games it does seem a bit of a waste. But it does work flawlessly for Smash Bros as advertised. I haven't bought anything from Nintendo that I would say is of lesser quality and this is no exception. MUCH better build quality than other 3rd part controller adapters out there.

Still unopened, looking forward to use it. I find it pretty amazing that I can play all 4 Smash Bros. with the same controller on the Wii and Wii U.

I got a North American one. Love it! Like another user said, no input lag whatsoever. The new gamecube controllers feel incredibly tight. I feel like they have a new "A" button, not sure, but it feels like a tighter click. That said, all my other gamecube controllers are anywhere from 6-9 years old XP

I personally like the feel of the game on the gamecube controller more than the gamepad. The gamepad's left joystick feels a little loose for how I like to play, whereas the gc controller's left joystick feels tighter. Although I love playing on the gamepad screen ^_^ It's definitely is not bad/harder to play on the gamepad, but to me the gc controller had a slightly better feel.

To do 8 players you have to have this adapter? Does it support wireless controllers for up to 4 or 5 players (4 controllers plus gamepad plus 4 gamecube?)

Do you need two adapters to do 8 players? (8 gamecube controllers only?)

Here are the compatible controllers:
In an eight-player battle, the following controllers can be used.

○Wii U GamePad (Max 1)
○Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus* (Max 7)
○Wii U Pro Controller (Max 7)
○Nintendo GameCube controller** (Max 8)
○Nintendo 3DS series system*** (Max 8)

  • Includes expansion controllers (such as the Nunchuk or Classic Controller Pro).
    • Two GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U accessories are required to connect eight GameCube controllers (each sold separately)
      • In order to use a Nintendo 3DS as a controller, each Nintendo 3DS system must have Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
I assume that any combination is possible as well, such as 4 Gamecube controllers with 4 Pro controllers. You DO need two adapters if you want to use 8 Gamecube controllers.

Thats not correct. You can use any combination of 8 controllers, mexcept of course you cant use more than the one gamepad

That's about the only thing that they missed on the controller front. They've of course confirmed that dual gamepad support is possible on the Wii U, but didn't include the feature here.

Otherwise, every reasonable combination is allowed (Obviously, a balance board, the Logitech Wii wheel, and so on aren't viable options).

People need to get over this idea of dual-gamepad support, just assume that it's not going to happen.

Anyways, I thought the GC adapter was an essential thing and I'm kinda annoyed it's not as available as it could have been. I might grab one down the road. That said as it is I can already get 8 players even without it. Admittedly two of those people will have to use a WiiMote + Nunchuk and one of those people would have to be on a 3DS. Still, not that much of a stretch.

It is correct. On the back of the game case for Smash Bros. Wii U is shows that only 7 Pro Controllers and Wii Remotes can be used at one time. Still, does anyone really own eight Pro Controllers???

It is pretty easy to find a combination of controllers that work. I assume that dual gamepad support isn't coming just because the cost of a second gamepad would be more than most are willing to pay for a second controller. But this is Nintendo so anything is possible, but I don't really miss dual gamepad support to be honest.

Didn't cross my mind to buy one at the time since I normally use the more modern controls. But thinking about some "what-if" scenarios like having more than 6 people who wants to play at once since I haven't tested if I can connect more then 4 wireless Wii/ U controllers yet (not including Gamepad) or wanting to play my old DDR games in wii mode, I kind of wish I had one just in case.

If you can find one. They are sold out everywhere around me and online prices are absolutely insane.

Still had four Gamecube controllers, so I had to get one. No joke, it was the last one GS had in stock.

Impressions: It works flawlessly.

The back of the box says for use with games such as Super Smash Bros for Wii U. I'm certain there will be an update to allow more games for it.

Yeah I am not having any luck finding one either so my copy of Smash for Wii U still sits unopen

Weird, it's still ale to be pre orderd at my local game mania but that's more likely due to the release date for the amiibo bundle and solo GC adapter is December fifth instead of november 28th when the game releases

I grabbed a released preorder adapter in the hopes that nintendo will patch in support for other games. I don't need it for smash. I have a luigi fight pad, pro controller and I like the gamepad.

I agree to a point. I don't think the dreams some have will ever come to fruition.

But two gamepads during multiplayer, with no special utilization of the touch screen, isn't something that would've surprised me too much.
