And I'm not Skywake, but the primary point of a console as I see it is to play a game on your tv screen. The gamepad screen is a great asset that can be used to supplement the experience in ways that wouldn't be possible without it and to provide additional display options like off tv play or dual screen local multiplayer to provide two players with independent displays.

But if a game is created from the ground up with the touch screen taking center stage leaving your tv as a secondary display that's rarely looked at, what's the point of such a project being on a console instead of a handheld? If you don't want to play games on your tv, you buy a handheld, not a console.

Wii U software should always be fully enjoyable on the big screen.

Under that rule games like NintendoLand and Little Inferno shouldn't exist. The great thing about the Wii U is devs have many different options for input. For my suggested game idea I don't think the experience would be anywhere near as good on the 3DS. A RTS is supposed to be a long game (possibly several hours) and a portable system is supposed to be played in short bursts. Plus for a RTS I would want a bigger touch screen compared to the 3DS, so the Wii U would make the most sense. (Maybe with tablets being a secondary objective)

So the GamePad shouldn't be the main focus for a game?

Not necessarily. It can be a very large part of the game but I don't think it works really well when the two screens are competing for your attention. It works well when it's either really clear when you should be looking at the second screen or when it's just supplemental information.

Personally I think a game like Okami would make the best use of the GamePad. That game is basically built for GamePad + TV. Self explanatory, game plays like usual most of the time with the TV showing the action and the GamePad showing the map. Then you press a button when you want to perform an action and draw the action on the GamePad. Now that's the best GamePad idea and the game already exists on other platforms. Would that mean the GamePad is not the main focus? Well it'd be about 50:50 right? The important thing in that example is that the TV and GamePad would never fight each other for attention.

edit: to deliberately lineup "GamePad" as much as I could

Yes I agree with that. I think a good example where it is ok for both screens to demand attention is ZombiU because it adds to the atmosphere. You are constantly checking your surroundings with the TV screen while digging though boxes and bags for supplies on the GamePad. But for the most part I want 1 screen to be the primary screen and the other to supplement the primary. Like the Map in Batman, the Radar in Switch Force, or the HUD being on the TV while all the action takes place on the GamePad (like my game suggestion above)

Most of the game would be on the GamePad with HUD Elements and Map being on the TV allowing for Off-Screen play but having extra features if you aee using the TV. Graphics could be simple (like Starcraft 1 style) because you are mainly on the GamePad. Optionaltwo player mode where the second player gets the TV screen and can use any type of controls the dev wants (such as Pro or even Wiiremote +Nunchuk). Can be played online in any ccombination of 4 players or less and both players from a single Wii U can play online together. A map editor would be nice but not necessary as that might hurt online play. Look at Starcraft 1 and Halo Wars for inspiration

EDIT: Sorry about the wall of text

If this was a kickstarter project, it would have been the first that I'd support. I'd buy that today.

Oh I know lol. In fact I have talked to some friends about making it but as we are not experienced enough it is on the back burner, but if anyone else wants to make it theee is a rough outline lol

I would really like to see a dungeon keeper style game that uses the gamepad. Local multiplayer would be the keeper on the pad, and up to 4 players on the TV and more of a party game. Online would 1v1.

To me the gamepad's focus should be on "secret" stuff a player does, or games where it's 4v1,and the 1 has a little more power/view or whatnot than the other 4. It's a local fun tool, or a map/inventory in games, and off-TV play is great.

I really give a big sigh when I see someone complain about the gamepad, and moreso when it seems to come from a dev. If you don't have a use for it in your game, don't use it! It shouldn't be shoehorned (just like motion control, the mic on DS, etc) it should flow organically from the style of the game, and if it doesn't, ignore it!. As great as SM3DW was, I thought the gamepad usage was shoehorned in for no good reason.

I am probably one of the 0.001% of people that prefer the gamepad over the wii u pro controller.

Never heard of Little Inferno, but the tv saw no shortage of usage in the couple of hours I've spent on Nintendoland so far.

Little Inferno was a Launch eShop title, very fun. Maybe I should have pointed out certain NintendoLand games like F-Zero, Donkey Kong, or Yoshi that use the GamePad mostly

EDIT: @SavoirFaire I am with you in that 0.001%

Maybe we should lobby Nintendo with some of these ideas! They all seem practical and feasible. I am actually surprised we haven't seen some of them already since launch.....

Oh, and Little Inferno is very different and well worth checking out on the e-shop.

That last one has already happened a couple times...

Hello Nintendolife community,

I searched for a thread like this because I have a few ideas for good use of the Wii U gamepad.

Do you remember the great wrestling games on Nintendo 64 from AKI, like Wrestlemania 2000 and WWF No Mercy? I really loved them. The gameplay was great. My sister and me fought in epic Tag Team battles and did so often used to kickout from a cover in the very last second. It's really sad that there is no wrestling game like this nowadays. The WWE 2K games don't bother me (neither does the WWE itself anymore) but I would buy a good wrestling game with great gameplay at day one. And now think about what would be possible if a game like this would come to Wii U. Here are my ideas for gamepad use:

2 Player co-op career mode: Player 1 is the wrestler and uses the Pro Controller, Player 2 the manager with the gamepad. During a match in which Player 1 is involved, he could check TV plans and match-ups for upcoming events or sign a contract with a new wrestler for his stable.

During the match Player 2 could also select a guy from backstage. This wrestler comes on running to the ring and helps Player 1 - or interfere in his match so that a new feud begins.

The Manager could also collect points by playing some mini games on the gamepad. These points could be spend for interfering in a match of his protégé, for example distracting the referee, so that Player 1 can do a forbidden move or something.

What do you think about that? I would love to play a game like that!

Concept 3 would be awesome for a Super Paper Mario sequel! Good game, but the 2D-3d flipping was annoying.

What, how could you find that annoying? I think the flipping was ingenious! And yeah, when I saw concept 3, I had the very same idea.

My GOTY? Legend Of Zelda: Splat of the child. Ah no, I meant LoZ: Breath of the SPLATOOOON!
