Topic: Game Ideas for the Wii U Gamepad

An article about the pad just went up so I thought I'd start a thread about how the gamepad could be used in games. I'll start with an example - 2D Metroid with a visor display on the pad screen for scanning and highlighting etc. Any other ideas.....?

making real time custom levels in a racing game(and by real time I mean the person on the gamepad has to make the course DURING the race!) that would be an amazing cool party racing game.

Check out Game and Wario, some neat ideas there. Its cheap now so definitely worth a look, although i do think it needed a few more mini-games to be better.

To answer your question, I would love to see more asynchronous local multiplayer like Zombie U and Nintendoland.

@Warioware Your idea is pretty awesome, having a 2D playingfield with a 3D, first person viesion on the gamepad. It also could double up as an in-helmet HUD.

Also, like @Emblem said, asychronous multiplayer is where its at. You cant get that on other consoles and its lots and lots of fun.

I really want a RTS on the GamePad. Most of the controls would be touch with your free hang allowing for some button inputs. Most of the game would be on the GamePad with HUD Elements and Map being on the TV allowing for Off-Screen play but having extra features if you aee using the TV. Graphics could be simple (like Starcraft 1 style) because you are mainly on the GamePad. Optionaltwo player mode where the second player gets the TV screen and can use any type of controls the dev wants (such as Pro or even Wiiremote +Nunchuk). Can be played online in any ccombination of 4 players or less and both players from a single Wii U can play online together. A map editor would be nice but not necessary as that might hurt online play. Look at Starcraft 1 and Halo Wars for inspiration

EDIT: Sorry about the wall of text

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

A rearview mirror in a racing game.
Aftertouch motion controls in a shooting game.
A five player local multiplayer game where on player gets his own screen, and the TV is split four ways.

@Atariboy if you are referring to my idea then maybe there could be an option to use the standard buttons (like the player with the Pro Controller would have to use) and switch the GamePlay to the TV while having the HUD and Map on your GamePad. That would allow people not to be forced to use the GamePad screen but you wouldn't be able to play same system multiplayer with this control set-up

Made some concepts;
Concept 1
Concept 2
Concept 3
Concept 4
Concept 5
Concept 6

Keep in mind that this was just for fun. I have no idea how some of these would work (or if they'd work at all).

If someone can make the ninja stars from that Nintendo Land game more easily usable and fun, I will want that for every remotely comparable projectile weapon in every game.

There needs to be a fatal frame on the Wii U, it's inexcusable for their not to be. The camera obscure would function awesome with the gamepad controls.

I think of it this way. Imagine that playing a typical game is like driving a car and the main screen is your window. The GamePad is therefore like the mirrors and other different "views" into the outside. If those different "views" distract from the main "view" too much then your performance will deteriorate. So thinking about the car example the rear view mirror, odometer and even the GPS are not necessarily distracting. They give you information that relates directly to the primary view. A radio, TV or mobile phone however is distracting as is an annoying passenger.

That's what the GamePad should be used for. At most it should be an Odometer or GPS and it should avoid being a phone, radio or ratty kid.

So the GamePad shouldn't be the main focus for a game? The GamePad should only add a small amount of convenience? (Text auto correct)

Idea 1: Scary AR game to be played in the dark sitting on an office chair, TV not used.
Idea 2: Battalion Wars 3 modern looking military shooter with vehicles. Use the gamepad to move/coordinate troops
Idea 3: Eternal Darkness sequel. Gamepad can be used to create spells and do all the things the Tome did and used for sanity effects.
Idea 4: Accordion Hero: Comes with Accordion attachment, and screen displays the keyboard.
Idea 5: Full version of the Ninja star game from Nintendo land.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

Not necessarily. It can be a very large part of the game but I don't think it works really well when the two screens are competing for your attention. It works well when it's either really clear when you should be looking at the second screen or when it's just supplemental information.

Personally I think a game like Okami would make the best use of the GamePad. That game is basically built for GamePad + TV. Self explanatory, game plays like usual most of the time with the TV showing the action and the GamePad showing the map. Then you press a button when you want to perform an action and draw the action on the GamePad. Now that's the best GamePad idea and the game already exists on other platforms. Would that mean the GamePad is not the main focus? Well it'd be about 50:50 right? The important thing in that example is that the TV and GamePad would never fight each other for attention.

edit: to deliberately lineup "GamePad" as much as I could

I would say that most of what worked on the DS applies to the GamePad, as well. I wouldn't mind some GamePad only games, with the TV basically being some animation that reflects what you're doing on the controller.

I'm pretty sure that Meteos would be pretty awesome on Wii U, but that's a touch centric game. Perhaps this game would only be showing your opponents screens on your TV.

You could be using the touch screen, with your focus on the GamePad. Maybe doing a certain command on the GamePad will require you look at the TV, or vice versa(kind of like what ZombiU did, with the backpack). You trigger these sequences.

This might sound stupid, but you build a cake on the GamePad, then throw it at something on your TV, using the motion control and buttons. EDIT: The touch screen could be used to "flick" things at your TV, as well. Similarly to the ninja game on Nintendo Land.

EDIT: Maybe there could be a game, that utilizes 1-2 GamePads(there would be different play modes), where you play a card game, or something similar to planning out a strategy, then put it against other plays on screen. Kind of like ZombiU multiplayer, except turn based. Then the other players can figure out how to beat said strategy in real time.

@19Robb92 Maybe you should send some of them to Nintendo!

I started this up just because there seems to be some issue with how to actually use the pad but looks like we've come up with some good ideas in a fairly short time!

Couple more - some kind of 3rd or 1st person action game with a strategic deployment satellite map on the pad screen. Or if they released Shenmue on the Wii U I'd like Ryu's notebook on the touchscreen, even if that is a pretty basic thing.

And A World Ends With You sequel.

@Warioware Haha, nah. I just find it fun to play with the concept.

What would be neat though, IMO, would be this:

Imagine the scenario of A Link Between Worlds, where there are two worlds that are somehow connected to each other, yet separated. But, instead of having your character go between these two worlds, you have two main characters, one to play as in each distinctive world (you can think of it as if you were playing as Ravio saving Lowrule as well as Link saving Hyrule, without them ever meeting up). As for the GamePad's part of this, one world is played soley on the GamePad itself, and the other is played on the TV, and you can switch between these in the blink of an eye whenever you want (or need) to.

I think that would be really cool.

Even better is if instead of switching, Link is affected by both worlds at once. So, if there's an invisible barrier in one world, there's something there blocking you in the other.

In any case, I'd rather see a new Four Swords game.
