Do you think a game we don't know a release date for or a game we don't even know about yet could be released on May 29th/30th. In 2014 we got Mario Kart 8, 2015 we got Splatoon but what about 2016?

Zelda WiiU?

I think this is a very interesting question! Kimishima's statement today seems to indicate that NX might not be released this year, so there are probably a few Wii U release that we don't know about yet for 2016.

A pre-summer release seems to be important to Nintendo, so it's likely that some software will release in late May. I think it's a bit too soon for Zelda Wii U in May, since Nintendo probably want people to be able to play through Twighlight Princess: HD before Zelda U releases.

The date for a major Wii U (and probably 3DS) release would probably be May 27 this year, BTW. If they follow the marketing pattern for the past 2 years, there will be a big marketing push from mid March, but the product title should be known before that.

If a late May release is indeed happening this year, a new title from Retro or Pikmin 4 could be some low odds guesses.

@jariw: well Pikmin 4 was according to Miyamoto nearly complete a few months ago. Unless they've been kicking back or insert obligatory NX comment here I'd say that is a good bet.

I think the spot may be reserved for Pokkén Tournament. The last two years Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon held the spot. Both focusing on multiplayer and both being huge successes. Pokkén Tournament will probably sell well being a Pokémon game alone. It seems to fit for the summer title of 2016.

@AlliMeadow: Pokkén Tournament is coming March 18, that was just confirmed today.

Star Fox Zero or an unannounced game, while I do think the July rumour is too far it does seem to make sense for a May release given how packed March is.

April 22 now confirmed for Star Fox Zero (at least in the US), so the late May spot now got even more interesting.

Maybe Project Robot or Guard have evolved into something far bigger..Maybe they're just 2 parts of a bigger mini game collection that uses the Gamepad in unique ways.Nintendo Land 2 possibly.

Well this should certainly be a fun thread, at least until the next Nintod Direct when the question probably gets answered.

Some random, yet perhaps relevant, thoughts -
1. If Pikman 4 were a Wi U game Miyamoto would have just said so when he said it was nearing completion so it has to be either 3DS, NX or mobile. Hopiefully NX.
2. Releasing a big game end of May again makes sense, but this is Ntineod, they rarely make sense. I still don't understand why Club Nintod ended 1 year before the new one comes out. Woudln't it have made sense to keep CN going until AFTER the new one opens? Woudlnt that have been a more seamless transfer process for us? Nintendo logic.
3. What company is going to announce and release a big game 2 weeks before E3? So it can't be a new big game.
4. Starfox Zero can still be delayed, already happened once, or is it twice now?
5. Pokken Tournament releasing in 2 months means it's probably good to go even if that means drips and drabs like Spaltoon for the next 6 months as fighters get added.
6. Zelda U was not shown at E3 last year. Are they really going to release Zelda U without it making a big splash at E3? I suppose it could happen, but I don't think so. If it was going to be ready by this May, it would have been shown at E3 last year. I still think 2017 for Zelda U, even if it gets a release date this year, a delay after that date is almost inevitable.
7. Mario and Sonic at Rio Oympics is due out on 3DS in March, but not Wii U, so that could be it. For those who are thinking - "who would put out that garbage as their big May game?" - well the same company that put out Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival as their big holiday game last year, that's who.

So Mario and Sonic it is. Or maybe Starfox. Or maybe nothing from April until Sept.

Genei Ibun Roku ♯FE still needs a date as well.

I highly doubt there is an unannounced Wii U game for Spring 2016. My guess is Mario and Sonic 2016 with a May release date.

Did we get something on May 2013? If not then this is not a surefire pattern. Specially this May that Iwata is not there.

Anyway, the game is usually something with the potential to be big, multiplayer fun, online or not, so I don't see Pikmin, SF or Zelda in there. Unless Pokken gets delayed. I lean towards something we don't know about or we don't expect at all.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Not sure about that one. We know that Nintendo has experimented with Pikmin on the DS and 3DS, however, it just didn't work. The screen was too small to properly capture everything that was happening on screen. I don't think they suddenly changed their mind about that.

Miyamoto only mentioned that Pikmin 4 was nearing completion, nothing else. That doesn't mean it cannot be a Wii U game. If Nintendo said ''We're working on a new mainline Pokémon game.'' Nobody will question the platform, of course it's going to be a handheld game.

In 2013, Nintendo still struggled to release their intended 2012 launch titles.

A year earlier (in October 2014), Miyamoto said this to the investors:
If I am allowed to do a little bit of PR here, we released a series of short films called “Pikmin Short Movies” on October 25 at the Tokyo International Film Festival. If you have not seen it yet, I hope you will check out the information on the Internet. The short film is only about 20 minutes, but this is our very first animated movie that uses “Pikmin” as its theme. We’re planning to make this 3D movie available on Nintendo 3DS and make the HD version of the movie available on Wii U in the near future. At the same time, we have also prepared a demo version of “Pikmin 3” so anyone who hasn’t played Pikmin can experience its unique joy. Continually launching campaigns after the release of software will lay the groundwork for the next iteration of “Pikmin” in the future. And needless to say, we want it to be one of the motivations for potential consumers to purchase Wii U. We are making a variety of different efforts.

The way I read this, it would not make sense for any other platform than the Wii U (which would also be money-efficient, since the technical framework is there) for Pikmin 4. But currently, I think the late May title is whatever it is that Emily Rogers has found.

@jariw: Pikmin 4 on the Wii U is very likely. All the assets are there and they've done it before. It's definitely something to expect in a future Direct.

@Octane: @jariw: "Miyamoto only mentioned that Pikmin 4 was nearing completion, nothing else."

But if it was nearing completion back in Sept don't you think they would have shown it off at E3? They showed Zelda U off at E3 in 2014. Pikmin isn't Zelda or Mario or Metroid, but if you have a failing system like Wii U, and you have a known franchise like Pikmin, and the fourth game is "nearing completion", not just getting started, not on the drawing board, nearing completion, don't you want to show that game off? They showed off Yoshi's Wooly World over 2 years before it released. If Pikmin 4 is so certain to be coming that it is almost done, what do you gain by keeping so hush hush about it when you show off other games 2 years in advance?

I feel 80% it isn't on Wii U, but if it is on Wii U, it will be shown off at E3 this year for "a planned" release this holiday 2016. Not in May. How long did they show off Pikmin 3 before it released in August? 1 year before at E3. Of course it was announced in 2008 for the Wii, in case anybody wants a precedent for a Pikmin game getting moved back a platform.

I keep expecting something for end of May. Maybe the Paper Mario rumor is that May game. If they announced it in the next 2 weeks that would be plenty of time to hype it up. Seems like March and April are crowded as is the whole of 2016 for RPG's on 3DS. Will be interesting to see how 2016 plays out.

E3 2014 was about showing as many Wii U future titles as possible (including experimental things that might never release). In 2013, most of the future games were revealed on a Nintendo Direct not connected to E3. E3 2015 was a Super Mario Maker party. They try different things at E3.

TP: HD was announced in November 2015, released in March 2016. Pokken Tournament for Wii U was announced in August 2015 and releases in March 2016. E3 2015 just wasn't the place to announce future games.

@rjejr: I completely understand your point, and it would've been a valid argument if it wasn't Nintendo saying that they are changing their strategy when it comes to announcing games.

''It goes back to the statement i made earlier about how we view E3. We just fundamentally don’t believe in showing content at E3 that is going to be a long term proposition. We like to show content that typically will launch in the upcoming Holiday and maybe extending into the first half of the following year. And at this point, the new Zelda for Wii U is not a 2015 project.''

I know it's the complete opposite of what they've been doing with games like Woolly World and Zelda U, but if this is their new strategy, so be it. And that means that we can expect a lot more surprise announcements.
