If you've got a few hundred dollars/pounds/euroes burning a hole in your wallet and don't have more important things to save money for and want to use it to buy something to entertain yourself then it makes sense to do so. But you've gave us nothing at all to go on, so all this is is yet another forum for the usual suspects to spout their rhetoric. Maybe tell us what games you're interested in apart from one so we don't have a repeat of 'I don't like the rehashed games on Wii U so there's not a chance you'll like them either' like we've already had above.

If you're really that interested on the online component it'd be ideal to buy it at or near launch, so they kind of missed the boat on that. So better safe than sorry is still the best approach, until there's confirmation (not just rumors and PR speak, legitimate confirmation) that the NX is not backwards compatible, buying a Wii U at this point is too much of a risk.

There is no risk buying a Wii U. The customer knows exactly what to get.

Bolt_Strike wrote:

Also, the Wii U's library is very overrated, it's mainly rehashes of Wii/DS/3DS games and niche titles. Aside from the aforementioned Splatoon and MK8 there's really not much worth buying a Wii U for.

Again, you comment on games you haven't played. Lego City: Undercover, Yoshi's Woolly World, Pikmin 3, Affordable Space Adventures, Runbow, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Tropical Freeze, Rayman Legends, Captain Toad, Wind Waker, Smash U, FAST Racing NEO, Hyrule Warriors, NintendoLand are all great games. I think you are confusing it with the Wii game library, which is really overrated IMO.

Plus, the longer you wait, the cheaper the bundles will get, and if you do ultimately decide to get a Wii U even after we know about the NX, it'll be less hard on your wallet.

This is what people have said for many years now, and it hasn't happened yet AFAIK? In Japan, Nintendo has even gradually increased the price of the Wii U bundles since launch. The bundles got better, but they have not yet become cheaper.

What they don't know, though, is what the Wii U has that the NX won't, and so it is a risk until we have that information.

The vast majority of those are niche, and games like Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker, and Smash are just retreading old ground instead of creating distinct experiences. The Wii did a much better job at making new iterations of old IPs feel distinct with games like Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, Metroid Prime 3, and Mario Kart Wii. Most of the Wii U's biggest games are just riding the coattails of the Wii, DS, or 3DS, with games like NSMBU, 3D World, Tropical Freeze, Woolly World, and Rainbow Curse all basically recycling NSMB Wii, 3D Land, DKCR, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Canvas Curse. Meanwhile there's no bold, open ended Mario game like 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy that uses a unique game concept and shows off what the Wii U can do. There's no Metroid Prime 4 that the creators actually have good ideas for and is just begging for Gamepad support. Zelda is coming... eventually, but it'll be too little too late to save this lineup. So there's a definite sense that the lineup feels creatively bankrupt, especially when you look at Nintendo's most prominent IPs. There's too much of the same things we just saw a few years ago and not much really stands out.

There is no risk in OP keeping the Wii U.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I would buy a New 3DS XL over a Wii U (if you don't already have a handheld). This advice is coming to you from someone who isn't necessarily going to get an NX anytime soon.

Well that makes a huge difference in this topic. Because now it's not a matter of deciding whether or not this lineup is worth rushing out to the store for, but what you can do to justify your purchase. And there's enough for the latter... barely.

If I didn't have a Wii U I would not buy one this late. The system is winding down, and even if the NX isn't backwards compatible physically, it most likely will be digitally. Any games I had interest in could still purchased on the new system, which in the long room would be nicer to have my entire Wii U collection built into my NX. There is also currently no 'reward' from Nintendo for buying a console or games. When the NX is released, I would receive points from the new reward system for buying the Wii U games digitally.

New consoles usually start with a burst of new experiences cause it's... well... new, and then there is a bit of a lull as we wait for the first good post launch titles to be released. Having a Wii U backlog would fill this void.

The Wii U has a least a year and a half of life left. We can be pretty sure Nintendo isn't going to release a new home console this year, especially if you consider the fact that Nintendo has never had such heavy releases in a home console transition year before.

That said, I'm not getting one. I'm enjoying my Wii, 360, and PS3 plenty right now, and the Wii U has only 2 or 3 games that I really want on it. I'm counting on the NX being backward compatible so I can play Zelda on it.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

They don't have heavy releases this year. The Wii U's lineup has been pretty bare since E3 last year, is it really that unreasonable to think that the reason for that is that they're working on NX launch titles for 2016?

Zelda, Pokken Tournament, SMT X FE, Star Fox. That's quite the lineup for only the beginning of the year. Yes, they were all delayed, but at least since the SNES, Nintendo hasn't had big releases like that in the same year as a new home console.

E3 was terrible, I don't deny that, but it was more due to lack of quality, not quantity.

1. If the Wii U lineup is bare then I wonder what you think of the 3DS lineup currently
2. The statement was qualified, the claim was that it's a heavy year for a "transition year"
3. This was the Wii's lineup in the US for the year the Wii U launched:

  • Just Dance 4
  • Epic Mickey 2
  • NPC Pikmin 2 (EU/Japan: 2009)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles (EU: 2011, Japan: 2010)
  • Mario Party 9
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever (Japan: 2011)

I think the statement holds, the Wii U's lineup for this year is pretty heavy for a transition year.

Even more reason to believe that they're releasing the NX this year. We have a fat load of nothing from BOTH consoles. If they intend on continuing with the 3DS and Wii U then why do they have nothing major for this entire year?

No, it's not heavy at all. You named 6 games that released on the Wii in 2012. We only have 4 for the Wii U this year. The lineup is worse in quantity, and arguably not that much better in quality, so it's not exactly in a league above that Wii lineup.
