It is a decently supported rumor on why it would be smash bros. IT said the direct would be to honor brawl's anniversary in japan.
Eh, as much as I would absolutely LOVE for there to Smash Bros. news this month, I wouldn't hold my breath. It's rather early to be talking about the game considering how early in development it is. But hey, I'm all for surprises. But again, more likely it will be about games closer in the pipeline such as Pikmin 3. Speaking of which, I hope they announce a launch date for it soon.
Oh, and who is this IT that said such things anyway?
Eh...they had plenty of time now...its almost been like, what, a year since Uprising came out? lol
Its obviously not going to be nowhere near done, but they could have something to show off.
True, Sakurai did say they already have a prototype. And I can imagine that the extra help from Namco-Bandi's team has sped things up considerably. Undoubtedly the game will be showcased sometime soon (at the latest E3), but I just can't see Nintendo announcing anything about it this early in the year, but of course I could be wrong. Heck, it'd be nice to know what it will be called at least...
I do believe that they have enough done to make a trailer. Plus Reggi did say when he vised the Nintendo world store that there will be some surprises coming soon after the WIi U comes out everywhere and also he said we would be seeing smash bros making it's appearance which was already known so we could get a surprise announcement. I do think that if it isn't shown then that we will see it as a Big highlight at E3 in june.
Nintendo Directs are not monthly or bimonthly, Nintendo does them whenever they feel like. And we definitely won't have any real Smash Bros news so soon, Nintendo latel hasn't been showing games that are more than a year off and they haven't even been working on the new Smash Bros for a year, games like that take at least 3-4 years to make. Even this E3 will be too soon, Pikmin 3 was first announced several years ago and nothing was shown until this past E3.
But you have to remember that there is a whole extra team from Namco-Bandi helping them out this time. Sure we don't know the size of the team, but surely that speeds up development.

I'm hoping for some Smash Bros news. Although it is probably pretty unlikely for a before e3 announcement, I just played some Melee and can't wait for Smash Bros Wii U

Somewhat. A bigger team can speed up development but usually it just means they can make the game bigger and better. It still doesn't mean the game will only take a year or two, plenty of games have development teams that are quite immense as is. In the industry, most big name games have a projected goal date of at least 3 or 4 years and they generally don't push those dates closer no matter how the development team or other resources change. Extra time just means extra content. I suspect Sakurai will use these resources to create a larger game with better balanced characters. At the very least, we shouldn't have to worry about delays, but Sakurai has already given the impression he doesn't want to release much info early on this time.

So basically, it will take approximately the same amount of time (3-4 years) but due to the bigger task force there should be more overall content. I'm cool with that.

Oh me too. At the very least, we should have much better character balancing this time. Still, I'd be very surprised if we get any big info on the game until next year. I also doubt we'll see a Dojo this time, I see Sakurai wanting to surprise us more.

I think you're overestimating how much time they actually spent on Pikmin 3. I think it's more than likely that the team that's been working on Pikmin 3 have been working on other games over the past few years, so Pikmin 3 didn't get their full attention until recently. Hence, why it's suddenly starting to get done.
I say Smash Bros. will be revealed at this years E3 at the soonest, and more than likely at next year's E3.
I'm not expecting any announcements for any major games that haven't been announced or revealed yet. Probably just more information on games that we already know exist, but aren't yet released, like Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Game & Wario.
E3 is going to be the time to announce or reveal the popular games. However, if Iwata does decide to announce what games we're getting this year after the launch window ends, anything could be announced or revealed, but it might be too soon for that now.
I suspect Smash Bros 4 will be shown at E3, simply to compete with Sony and Microsoft showing off their new console and hopefully stop it gathering so much hype and coverage. After all, everyone wants the game, so why not use it to show the Wii U can compete with its new competitors?

That is one of the main reasons why I also think Smash will be showcased this year. It's the game that everybody wants, grabbing attention in a way that few other games can; which is exactly what Nintendo will want to do when Sony and Microsoft display their own new consoles.

Well it looks like the Nintendo Direct will be tomorrow and not February. I am hoping that maybe there will be some news on the Wii U's VC but I wont get my hopes up.

This one's Wii U only. Main Nintendo Directs focus on both the 3DS and the Wii U (Wii before the October 2012 Direct).

There might be another one in February too, it's not like Nintendo spaces these things far apart.
