For better or worse the Wii U has a ton of controller options for a lot of games. I like the choice but just wanted to see what people prefer- Gamepad, Pro Controller, Wiimote & chuck, Wiimote & classic controller.
I like classic controller best, it feels a little better than Pro for some reason except for top buttons and triggers. I do like the Gamepad as well but am much better at platformers (which are my fav) with a smaller controller. I just started using Pro since Christmas so maybe it will grow on me.
Basically GamePad unless there's nothing interesting done with the GamePad and I'm not playing off-TV. Otherwise Pro-Controller is better if I can be bothered. I don't know how I'll play Smash and Kart because on the Wii I settled on WiiMote + Nunchuck and WiiWheel for those. Oh and most 2D platformers I'll happily play with just a WiiMote if that's an option, especially NES VC titles, but usually I'm playing them off-TV.
The problem is picking up a different controller is a waste of effort when the GamePad does just as good a job.
The Gamepad. Mostly because I post on Miiverse all the time, and it's convenient with the touch screen.
If I were to pick between the controllers that don't have a screen, I'd say the Remote+Nunchuck Combo. It feels comfy in my hands.
Gamepad. Played all of Pikmin 3 on it. If the Wii U had come out without it and it was just wiimotes - hate wiimote/stupid nunchuck- would not have picked it up at launch.
Depends on what I'm playing.
With Zelda and Pikmin I love using the gamepad because it adds to the game or makes it easier in some ways. Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Tekken, Batman etc.... I have to go with the pro controller every time.
I try to avoid the Wiimote like the plaque when it comes to the Wii U.
Gamepad unless I'm playing Pikmin 3 or a Wii game. I like the gamepad as a controller in general and don't see the point in spending extra money on a pro controller that I'll never use.
The GamePad was my favorite controller during the first couple months because having a screen on my controller was simply mind-blowing and it was surprisingly light for its size. The screen is really a great selling feature but it's not that exciting after a while. Then I received the Pro Controller this christmas and that's definitely the best controller. It's light, has great ergonomics, and the battery lasts forever.
Nintendo would've won the console war if they had waited and released a more powerful console with the Pro Controller as its main controller, great games such as Super Mario 3D World, and all those mainstream third party titles everybody wants.
depends on the game. I think all the different control options help set the Wii U apart from all the other systems. Also, I like motion controls when they are done right and don't feel tacked on.
I have all the control options because of various reasons, but here's my favorites in order.
GamePad
Pro Controller
Classic Controller
WiiMote+Nunchuck
I love the WiiMote and Nunchuck, but there aren't any Wii U games (aside from NintendoLand and Black Ops 2) that I own that use them. I either default to the Classic Controller or Pro Controller for Virtual console.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
