Are you able to play your games directly off of the external HD or do you have to move games back and forth??

You can load games straight off the external HDD. I have the 2TB version of the product I linked above, coupled with the exact same cable I linked as well.

It works well. I actually saw better results from using this HDD than the A/C powered one from Toshiba.
