Topic: External Memory?

Hey guys. Been having a small bit of trouble hooking up some external memory, and I've tried SDHCs, HDDs, Flash Drives etc. usually stick to popular brand names too. I've tried using a hard drive with a power source but it didn't work either.

Basically, I'm looking for a small source of memory, even 50-100gb would be plenty. I'm UK based if that has any relevance too. I don't intend on downloading many games, but I went for the 4gb console first day and I can't even perform the Smash updates to play the game. Any help appreciated, thanks.

Hello. May you explain your problem? What didn't work exactly?

Just buy a 64gb micro SD card and a USB adapter for it (one of the teeny ones) and stick it in the top socket at the rear of the console. Job done. No additional power supply needed.

@Chandlero: Not sure what's to explain, basically I'm just looking for a link for something I described above that guaranteed works.

I've been wondering this lately, too. Wondering what the best thing to use is for harddrive expansion (Flashdrive, as @gcunit mentioned, or an external HDD?)

I should update my own experiences by saying that I have recently had two experiences, loading the disc version of Yoshi's Woolly World, where I've turned on the Wii U, launched the game from the main menu (or might have been the quick start screen) and in the early stages of loading the game it has thrown up an error to do with lack of power to my secondary drive, but on both occasions I just reset the machine and tried again and the game loaded fine.

So I've no explanation really for why it happened those two times and not any other time, but it hasn't made me change my mind about the setup as it hasn't caused any problems and still works normally 99.9% of the time.

Hmm, weird. Maybe just adapter issues? Really tempted to go your route, sounds like the best option, without investing in a large HDD.

@JibberJabber: @Chandlero already asked this, but what exactly is going wrong? It would be easier to help you if we could understand exactly what the problem is. What happens when you plug-in a flash drive, for example? Does the Wii U show a message?
And as far as I know, you can't use an SD to store games on it (unless it's a microSDHC with a USB adapter, of course)
I would advise against a harddrive since they are a lot more vulnerable than flash drives and also additional baggage if you want to carry your Wii U around.
I know this is too late, but if you would've asked me before, I would've strongly advised against buying the white Wii U. Honestly, I don't even get why Nintendo is selling the 8GB version, that's not even enough space for one game (depending on the game, of course).

So far I used three different USB drives without any problems:

  • Sandisk Extreme 64GB - was too small, now it's my backup drive with the most important games and savegames
  • Mach Xtreme Technology MX-LX 128GB - used it for a while, but it's USB 3.0, so kind of a waste
  • Sandisk Cruzer Blade 128GB - currently connected to my Wii U and already full, although I should mention that I buy all my games digital

@Zizzy: To continue my full disclosure re. this trial I'm doing, the same error happened last night while I was actually half-way through a YWW level, so that's slightly more inconvenient than happening during initial boot-up. But I have logged over 4 hours on YWW and that's the first time it's happened, and it hasn't happened during any other games.

Further update: For whatever reason, I guess something caused by system updates, I think I've got to abandon my 'micro sd in a usb adapter' storage solution.

When I first set it up it worked fine, but recently it feels like my Wii U is actually set to detect it and deliberately stop me from using it. Having had it disconnected for a while I'll plug it in and get a few minutes into a game before I get the usb storage device disconnected message and have to reset. Trying the same game again the error occurs faster, then faster still on the third attempt.

I then plugged the usb adapter into my y-cable.... and still got the same error very quickly after booting, so it can't be a power-related fault.

Very frustrating having had it initially work without problems. Really need to be able to use one hdd for Wii and Wii U games, cos I can't be doing with 2 of them knocking about.

you could reformat the MicroSD card and try again, or reformat it in a computer, afterwards test the card in the computer to make sure it's not faulty, i.e bad sectors or something like that. You don't necessarily have to abandon your solution unless you have done some of that troubleshooting or you can't for whatever reason.

@MegaMari0 That's a fair suggestion, I'll give it a whirl and report back. Thanks.

Edit: I went into the Data Management section to look at what save game data I needed to copy before formatting the card, but when I did so I got a message telling me there was some 'unnecessary' data on the card and asking if I'd like to delete it. So I have deleted that data, hoping that that might have been what was causing the frequent trouble. Stay tuned...

Just thought I would mention, since it's something that has tripped me up, to be sure and move your savegame data to the USB/memory once you have it working. If you don't the updates will continue to try and download to internal memory and that may be full.

I had this issue when I had previously played a disc version of the game and had saved data on my internal memory and then tried to download the digital version later. I couldn't figure out why it kept saying I was out of memory instead of downloading to the hard drive. Once I moved all that games data to the hard drive manually I was able to download it to the hard drive too. Happened to me with Tropical Freeze and Dark Siders II

@gcunit: I got that same message recently (for my USB stick which was working fine, but had a lot of data written on it) and read some awful stories online where people's USB drives were damaged and this message was basically just a warning that they might fail eventually. But that didn't apply in all cases.
So I first made a backup of all relevant game data/saves and then I hit yes when it asked me to delete the unnecessary data. But it was fine, I had no problems with my USB stick since then. But it did leave me with the impression that maybe too many write operations were executed on my USB stick and that it would fail one day.

Still wonder why you have so many issues with USb drives and harddisks. Maybe the USB ports are faulty or the drives themselves?
