Hey everybody, a friend of mine recommended I get an external hard drive for my Wii U, but he couldn't remember whether you need a specific one or not. Did Nintendo make an official one that you have to buy?
Not official by Nintendo as far as I'm aware. Personally I'm using a 64 GB USB stick, a 16 GB, and a 8 GB. But I'm planning to transfer all of my saves to the 64 one.

@HobbitGamer usb works but not too reliable as many have said in the past. 16gb not a good idea as it’s less than the Wii u internal memory. You can use both simultaneously. It’s either the usb or internal drive.

@TheCurator it usually ok at first. Try and back it all up on a pc if you have a chance.
I’ve heard too many problems with usb thumb sticks on Wii u in Wii u’s start of life

It doesn't seem that you have already informed about that process because it doesn't sound too convincing. Have you tried this before? IDK what to say, but it was like something you did went wrong...Maybe you need to check the settings and then restart your computer, and it will work but be careful not to delete all the data you have saved. It's pretty easy to fall into the trap. I was like you, and no one gave me such advice. I already lost all my data, but I was helped by https://www.salvagedata.com/ . Now I'm careful about all my processes and pay attention to details and notifications.
Nintendo recommends using self-powered hard disk drives, i.e. devices that use an external power supply instead of drawing power through USB. Devices that draw their power from USB ports are known as "bus-powered" devices, and are not recommended for use with Wii U.
