Could this be the end of the big N? The wii, nintendo's best selling (but in my opinion worst) system is going to be discontinued. The 3DS sales tanked (probably due to a unremarkable launch line up) and was given a $80 price slash. Not enough info was given about the WiiU at E3 which nintendo's stocks( at a 6 year low) to drop 15%. It's a tough market, and if this keeps up, nintendo may very well become 3rd party. I however look forward to the day nintend becomes 3rd party, not because it would "Degrade" them, but because it would allow them to reach a larger audience. Just think; playing Brawl on Xbox live or mario galaxy with the ps3's 1080 graphics... no nintendo fan could say no to that. best of all, 3rd party nintendo would allow for casual game play on a hard core system, no longer forcing players to chose one. I know that people will call me un-loyal with this post, but I am a very loyal nintendo fan, and the truth is that if nintendo was 3rd party, it would still exist, just on a ps3 or 360. The point I’m trying to make is that if nintendo stopped producing hardware, it may be the best thing they've ever done, but what do you think of it?

I would guess that as long as there are video game consoles and handhelds, Nintendo will be manufactuing them.

No one is forcing players to choose "hardcore or casual". You buy the system that has the games you want, regardless of whether those games are "hardcore or casual". And each system has games in both categories.

Nintendo could survive as a third-party, but they definitely don't need to. They still want their hardware sales and licensing fees, so there's no reason for a last resort right now.
