Well my computer monitor doesn't have a HDMI port so I'm planning on getting the above converter. Now I've read somewhere that there won't be any sound.
But what if you just plug in your headphones to the game-pad?
I assume this will work, but if you play a game like Epic Mickey 2 with headphones, the headphones doesn't work. Woke up the whole household like that lol...

WHy not just get an HDMI TV instead? It would work out better than a monitor.

I think the only problem you will run into is that not every game plays all of its sounds through the gamepad, so plugging headphones into the gamepad may not work well

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Your best bet is to get an A/V receiver with HDMI that will carry the sound, then output HDMI using a DVI converter, or just go with a regular HDTV. Or, if you don't care about sound quality, you can use an HDMI signal splitter, then use an optic or headphone cable to plug into something else.
You're still most likely gonna need another device for sound.

The gamepad doesn't play all of the game's audio through it so you wouldn't get much sound.

Since the Wii U doesn't have optical out or multi A/V out (HDMI w/ RCA audio out), your best bet would be getting some sort of device that can extract the audio from the HDMI cable as well..something like this http://www.avhifi.com/shop/kanex-pro-dvi-analog-audio-hdmi-co...
Or whatever output your speakers use (maybe a 3.5mm jack? I don't know)

Or, you could just get a monitor that accepts HDMI. Either way, you're going to end up needing a bit of money to get the right adapters/cables

Something like this may also work as well

DVI -> HDMI is the cheapest and affordable option from what I gather. Everything else seems very expensive to the degree where it almost better to save up for a new monitor (and I already have a 22inch 2ms display) so kinds seems like a waste. Thing is we have a HDTV, but the TV is occupied most of the time.

But you sure about the limited sound thing? When I play Mass Effect 2 with the headphones plugged into the game-pad, the TV sound goes dead, and I can hear everything from speech, ambiance, gunfire to the music.

Maybe that's just with Mass Effect 3? When I played Nintendo Land I used headphones and only some of the sounds played through the headphones..some only played on the TV. Maybe games that have off-TV play will play everything through the gamepad 3.5mm output? I don't know!

Well I can confirm this works for ME3 at least, as soon as you in the menu all sound goes through the 3.5mm output. In both off-TV and normal.
So for $4 you can just get that adapter and plug in headphones for sound.

Will try other games too, but I'm starting to think not all games are equal in terms of support for this 3.5mm output.

Ok Epic Mickey 2, no headphone support whatsover.
Wii mode -> No support for Wii games.
Basic Wii-U menu (footsteps etc missing)

Nintendoland -> All games I tried so far works.
Zombi-U -> Works, but you need to enable headphone support in the sound options menu.

PS. Why is the 16:10 option greyed out

Nintendo Land does have separate audio from the TV but the TV compliments the audio coming from the gamepad, so you're not really getting all of the sounds they intended you to hear with just the gamepad. I still say it's not the best idea to use the gamepad as a primary source for audio!

I here all the sounds...
Everything that would of played on gamepad + TV, all plays on the gamepad when I put on the headphones.
