I have a 3TB version of this drive I use to store my music (actually I have 3 as I'm paranoid about taking backups), and it doesn't use a Y-cable but does require a power outlet. Obviously I'm using it on a PC, not a Wii U.

But, the hard drive I have is portable which has no power outlet. It is powered by usb on a pc. That is why I'm wondering if I would need a y-cable for the Wii U. Thanks though.
