I know this has already been posted in the MK8 thread, but I figured it would be off-topic to discuss it in that thread. So, here's the recently released image by Nintendo (for those who haven't seen and to set the mood for the post):
The name of the course is Sunshine Airport and is obviously inspired by Super Mario Sunshine. So, since Mario Kart 8 is heavily referencing Super Mario Sunshine here, does anyone think that we'll see some form of Super Mario Sunshine on the Wii U this year? Whether it's a VC release (which would be huge, considering it would be the first Gamecube game for the VC), a remake (like Wind Waker HD) or a sequel? Or does the Super Mario Sunshine inspired level in MK8 mean nothing?
Just as much as Coconut Mall confirmed Super Mario Sunshine 2's release on the Wii.
Everything Nintendo has ever done, even if it was simply done to reference a previous game, is them secretly confirming they are going to remake the referenced game.

MK7 had the DKCR track, and then... it got remade on 3DS!
@Gioku I can't think of any other Mario Kart game that used a track theme that wasn't from a game in the current or previous generation. So, this is the first time Mario Kart has ever done such a thing. Is that special enough for ya?
@ACK Just because something hasn't happened before doesn't mean it can't happen, does it?
No, it just means that Nintendo want to make a track loosely based on Super Mario Sunshine. They make Mario Kart tracks based on all their games. It's like how Mario Kart DS having Airship Fortress didn't mean a Super Mario Bros 3 remake was under way. Or how a new Yoshi's Island wasn't announced til ages after Mario Kart Double Dash. Or how Twilight House in Mario Kart DS didn't mean a Paper Mario 2 remake.
@CM30 Mario Kart DS had an Airship Fortress stage. Super Mario Bros. 3 was on the previous handheld (Super Mario Advance 4 on GBA).
Yoshi Circuit in Double Dash, was not a "Yoshi's Island" stage. It was a generic Yoshi stage, which is something that all Mario Kart games have had.
I don't know what you mean by "Twilight House" in Mario Kart DS. I'm looking at the list of stages and do not see a "Twilight House."
@turtlelink lol. Every Mario Kart game? Half of the Mario Kart games were made before Sunshine, so that's clearly not true. Mario Kart 7 didn't have a Sunshine themed course, either.
So, once again, never has Mario Kart game featured a track theme based on a game that wasn't on the current or previous platform.

You're trying to hard at this point, oh and Twilight House is a battle stage.
I don't think so either. Ice Climbers appeared in two Smash Bros. games and still nothing for them besides NES Remix. While Pit starred in one Smash Bros. game and got a new game after 20 years of absence. I see the same with MK games, or even having a Sunshine related stage in Galaxy 2, with all those piantas and a waterproof Yoshi.
My point is, not every reference hints at a new project in the respective franchise.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
