Topic: Does anyone else feel this way about Deus Ex

Human Revolution is honestly one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had with a FPS game, along with the first 3 Halo games.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

I played the original Deus Ex a few years after it came out. It was a fantastic experience. But it was a very 'gamey' experiance sometimes (if you know what I mean). Progression limitations based on how many lockpicks and key tools could get annoying, and once you get the Chinese Sword, you can cut down most doors any way. Its a fantastic experience.

Never played Invisible War. I heard it was bad.

But I did play Human Revolution last year. And I have to say its a lot more natural experience then Deus Ex was, its more intuitive stealth aspects added a lot, and its hacking mechanic got rid of the annoying Key and Pick juggling. Is it a better game? Debatable. Was it totally a worthy Deus Ex sequel? Very Yes.

EDIT: I will say I sort of hated Human Revolutions final story choices. So I decided to blow up everything.

Which for me is anything but a criticism, bearing in mind the medium we are in. Same with the original Resi over 4, same with the original Thief over the reboot. There is nothing wrong with imperfections, not game destroying ones, but the actual nature of challenging/awkward mechanics that help to add a sense of unease or complication in to the world does a lot more for me then the smooth sailing experience a lot of later series' entrants inevitably bring.

I can't even fathom how that would make a game better for anybody, but okay.

Games are Games, HBO Boxsets are HBO Boxsets. I'm not interested and never have been interested in an amalgamation between the two - hence why I play few AAA blockbusters and love Indie games.

Streamlining games and making the controls and options better is always better imo. If you like tank controls in the original Resident evil compared to 4 then that's you're prerogative but I'll take 4 over 1 and day of the week.

Difficulty in a game as a result of bad controls, time wasting or frustrating mechanics is always a bad way to go, and I'd rather have an easier game than one that creates difficulty through bad design. There are plenty of difficult games out there that are really well made. Just like @kkslider5552000 mentioned about the I Wanna Be The Guy games; they're terribly made and the difficulty is all artificial. If you want to play a well made (but challenging) indie Platformer get They Bleed Pixels or Super Meat Boy.

The thing is as i've been playing i get a major Perfect Dark feeling. Anyone else get that vibe from the game? Its no shape a bad thing at all just interesting.

It's not really that similar to the N64 one other than the fact it has more to it than just shooting enemies. It's definitely not as good for a game in 2013 as the original Deus Ex was back in the day but it's one of my favourite games of the last few years and it definitely does the original justice in many ways.

I just want to remind people that I can see the future. That outcome was totally predicted and totally inevitable, hence why I didn't even bother.

Dumbed down and made similar to other things that already exist is not better.

I'm going to acknowledge your (non)existance just this once: Dumbing down and streamlining are not the same thing, no matter how much people (you especially) want to believe that. Making things useable to the average person without sacrificing any necessary options is how you streamline. Dumbing down is when you actively remove necessary features or systems simply because you're afraid that some people might not get it. That doesn't happen as often as people (you especially) like to say.

Trying things and getting to grips with what you can and cannot do and working out the mechanics of the game is the best bit for me "making things usable for the average person" equates to removing all that which is my favourite bit.

But is it terribly made when the design is intentionally made terrible? IWTBTG's charm comes from the humor dirived from how impossible it is. Since it was intentionally made that way is it actually a bad game because its impossible? I'd say definitely not.

A bad game is still bad, no matter how much fun it pokes at itself. If the game just says to the player "Haha, look how unfair, unbalanced, and frustrating our game is, we did it on purpose!" it just shows that they know how bad it is as well as you do. A bad game doesn't stop being terrible when the developer acknowledges its flaws. Making a terrible game is easier than actually making a quality title. Trying to get away with it by pretending your game being terrible is somehow funny doesn't mean anything to me. Some games are so bad that it's funny - but creating a game around that idea is kind of pathetic.

I think I'd be less annoyed with IWBTG if people weren't so proud about the game.

And yes, being self-aware about a game being unfair doesn't make it good. At least not for a full game.

A lot of the sections of IWTBTG are actually very tightly designed. In that there is only one way to complete the section (as it is a 'trial & error' game). That requires a significant amount of fine tuning of level design and hazard timing. From a level designer point of view its actually impressive how much work and testing had to go into it. Especially with how many triggered hazards there are There was nothing easy about it.

But the game is free. So its not like you're paying money for a full frustrating game. So if you don't want to beat the game, that's valid and doesn't cost you anything.
