Topic: Do you use a LAN adapter?

I just ordered one so I can directly wire my modem to the Wii U instead of using wireless. I have really good internet andI never had a problem with playing online (aside from occasional laggy matches on Smash Bros), until I played Splatoon, which is hit or miss. Sometimes the connection is great, other times I get "unstable connection" messages and boots you out of a game.

I ordered a third party one though because Nintendo.com is out of stock, and I usually only get licensed Nintendo products. The reviews are mostly good but there are some bad ones.

Will I notice a huge difference in online play?

It will definitely be more stable, so you should see a huge difference if you have really good internet and the wifi is having issues at times. I have a third party one too and it's working fine, never heard of that brand before though.

I use it for one other reason. I tke my Wii U all over the place and unlike the 3DS you have to choose the default connection every time. It won't connect even if it knows the other network.Default connection means ignore everything else. With the lan adaptor you no longer have to reprogram it every time. Just plug in and play.

I bought a different one and tbh for me the improvement is negligible. I am actually looking into improving my internet speed.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Nope. No issues with hte online games I play: Splatoon, or Mario Kart 8. I did notice that there was lag in Smash Brothers I'm not a fan of that online to begin with.

Using Time Warner cable with an Airport Extreme router. The Wii U is about 8 feet from the router.

No; I used to, though it didn't improve it at all. I just had terrible internet in general, though. In this new apartment, the Ethernet port is in a very inconvenient place, though the Wi-Fi is very good anyway.

Got married.

I have the official LAN adaptor for the Wii but have never hooked it up to either that system or my Wii U as my wifi connection is very fast and reliable. (I wish I could prove that fact to all the Smash players who say my internet connection is garbage and that's why i have such laggy online matches - not the case, imo).

riderkicker

Nope. But in my case, the router is on the first floor & my WiiU is on the second so a LAN isn't doable. It's not perfect but it gets me through most games online save for maybe Smash Bros. Pretty much gave up regular online playing there.

If the Smash players say your internet connection is garbage, they might be right. In Smash, using WiFi without full duplex would likely lead to dropped packets regardless of connection speed. The lag is experienced on the other player's system, not the other way around. Both Smash and MK8 are very forgiving towards connections with packet drops, while Splatoon 2.0.0+ isn't.

I use mine but in my case I have a switch directly behind the TV. And it is objectively better than wireless in terms of both latency and bandwidth. So of course I use it. That's not to say that I think it's actually worth getting.

It really depends. If you are on the other side of the world with a crappy internet connection? If your Wii U happens to be sitting in the next room to your router/AP? Then it probably won't make a huge difference. If you're in the US with a fantastic internet connection and your Wii U is at the other end of your house? Then it'll probably be night and day. Either way, it won't be worse.

............ unless you're using powerline. Then it might actually be worse.

I have the official Nintendo one. Got it as soon as Sakurai in that one Nintendo Direct mentioned we should get one for optimum online play in Smash. It's been working perfectly ever since I got it!

I kind of wish I would have ordered the official one from Nintendo instead of a third party one but hopefully it won't make a difference.

@skywake Is internet speed much better in Australia? The States is notoriously atrocious for what we pay.
When I lived in JP, I had some super cheap internet, and the speed was about 2x better than the high-end stuff here.

I was talking about latency AND bandwidth with two extremes. If you live in the US you're probably going to be playing against Americans a lot more. That's who will typically be awake when you play and there are quite a lot of you. So latency will naturally be pretty low. Also if you have a good connection your latency will be lower still. At which point going to Ethernet? That'll make a huge difference. Purely because there's nothing left to improve.

Same with bandwidth. If you're on a sub-25Mbps connection you're not going to get any advantage at all when downloading stuff. Purely because your download speed is slower than your WiFi anyways. If you have a fast connection? 50Mbps, 100Mbps+? Going Ethernet will give you whatever speed you have upto 100Mbps. Which would also be an advantage.

........... and because we're on this topic, here's a graph I made for another forum. It should give an idea of how much more reliable Ethernet is vs WiFi in terms of latency. Again, something which matters far more if your connection is pretty decent to start with.

I just started using a direct wire connection from my modem to the Wii U and can definitely notice a difference in Smash Bros. I'm about to try Splatoon now. Hopefully no more "the connection is unstable" messages and the match ending.

EDIT -

it made a big difference in Splatoon. I think it even made me perform better because I'm getting a lot more kills now. That said, the game is still frustrating because my team always loses.

Obviously your quality of internet (and your oppenent's) and location also play huge factors, but I play on a wired connection and have only gotten around 3-6 Splatoon disconnects out of like 200-300 matches.

Edit: LOL, I feel your pain on having sucky team members. I hate seeing people rush out without covering the base at all...to only seem them literally 8-10 seconds later respawning at the home base...haha

Yeah, I've never tried the matchmaking in the game like how people are doing in the Splatoon thread. I've only played with random people so maybe that could have something to do with it.

I'm probably going to try Mario Kart 8 and also try Mortal Kombat X on my XBOX one. I haven't played it in months but I remember about half the matches had a bit of lag or delay when I was using a wireless connection.

Yes, i originally bought the official LAN adapter for my Wii and was very happy to discover i could just transplant it to the Wii U. improved bandwidth isn't the main advantage IMHO unless you're streaming HD video. it's surprising how little data traffic is generated by a game like Splatoon, i can easily download a couple of torrents at the same time. The real advantage for gamers is the rock stable connection.

I still think it's kind of dumb how you have to buy a separate attachment to be able to direct wire from your modem to your Wii U. Nobody sells it either so you have to order it online. I called three different GameStops in my area and they had no idea what I was talking about when I explained it to them.
