Topic: Do you think of the Koopalings as Bowser's children?

To me, they are his kids. I know there was an official announcement that they're not, meaning they could be Bowser Jr.'s cousins or adopted children of Bowser but it seems odd that this was changed.

I also enjoyed the trailer of Smash Bros where Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings terrorize Mario and company.

Since the first time I "interacted" with them was M&L SuperStar Saga, to me they have always been more like... Elite members of the Koopa Troop? And probably good friends.

They look more like him than other Koopas, so I also assume they're part of the same "subspecies" of royal/big Koopas.

They're just Bowser wannabes so Bowser decided to make them his minions.

The only time I felt like they were his children was during that old Mario 3 cartoon that I can't remember the name of. Was it The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3? Of course, that's an obvious given.

Other than that, no. And that cartoon wasn't even canonical.

They were described as his kids in Super Mario 3 and Super Mario World.

This is from the instruction manual of Super Mario 3:

TBH I never cared or minded either way, even as a kid. What I always thought was more interesting were the Reznors which as a kid I thought was an odd name. It was only much later I connected the dots and realised it was a nod to Nine Inch Nails. Ever since I've kinda liked the idea that someone working on Super Mario World in 1990 was listening to some NIN and thought "hey, this is good, we should name some of the bosses Reznors".

Aren't most of the Koopalings named after musicians too?

Roy Orbison, Iggy Pop, Lemmy Kilmister, Wendy O. Williams, and Beethoven are the obvious ones to me. Not sure who Larry or Morton are supposed to be.

@Rexcalibr, what was written in the English version of the SMB3 manual was actually a mistranslation. In the original Japanese manual (which I'd consider to be official, since it came first), they were just referred to as "Koopa's Minions".

So, when NOA/NOE recently stated they weren't his children, they weren't changing their original roles, they were restoring them.

Minions, children, what's the difference?

I always thought they were, until I recently found out they aren't.

In the end though, I don't care. I don't like that they've become such high-profile characters, especially since they've had exactly two games (I think?)

They certainly didn't deserve to ALL be included in MK8, while other characters were left out. I accept them as being different skins of Bowser Jr., but that's all.

They were in Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, and now Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. Two games, huh?

When I was a child I believed they were Bowser's children because of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario World cartoons. Anyway, I've always liked them very much, so I'm happy they have become more relevant. They all are truly big personalities, if you know what I mean. Bowser Jr's best appearance was at Super Mario Sunshine, if you ask me. That game, oh, I really liked that game, even when people didn't like it (when it was released).

I don't know why but I always thought of the Koopalings as Bowser's nephews and niece as a kid to now. Maybe it could be the type of relation they have in the game/cartoon combine with the uncle/ nephew & niece dynamic of that time (Scooby doo, Donald Duck, etc).

Now that I think about it didn't DK have a son (DK Jr.). I guess he lost the custody battle and prefers not to think about it.

A dying animal struggles, thrashes and howls in protest as its life torn from it. To see this in action, watch Animal Planet. The same thing happens when a video game is or isn't released. To see this in action, stay here.

That's because the DK from the arcade games is actually Cranky Kong. Donkey Kong Jr. is either the Donkey Kong will know now, or his father.

I was so happy they were in Mario Kart 8. I'm glad Nintendo is putting them in more games. Especially after such a long time of them not being featured. I hope in one of the future games, Nintendo develops them more, especially their relationship to Bowser and Bowser Jr.

Which other characters that were left out did you want in the game?

If anything, they should have put other characters in over baby Daisy, baby Rosalina, Metal Mario, and Pink Gold Peach. I don't like that there are 4 versions of Mario to pick from. I know it's called Mario Kart but that is just unnecessary.
