I'd be happy with a new Metroid game even if it wasn't open world, although that would be nice. Also, isn't Zelda already open-world?
No. Not in the slightest. Everyone who keeps saying this doesn't have the first clue as to what an Open World game even is...
Or you don't have a clue. Games like Wind Waker and Ocarina or Time are in large part open world. Sure they're much more restrictive compared to games like Fallout or Elder Scrolls, but just because of this doesn't mean they don't have many elements of an open-world game. Modern "open world" games are more of an expansion or redefinition of what Zelda originally created. Honestly, I think modern open-world games should be reclassified as Sandbox World games to stop this weird elitist classification once and for all.
And to the topic question: Yes, they should try the modern open world at least once. Though an every-time thing could get old real fast.

Except an open world refers to a world without restrictions. Honestly, even sandbox games don't even really fit the classification most of the time. A true open world game is one like Minecraft, where you can go anywhere and do anything.
Metroid isn't open world?
What IS open world anyway?
I mean yeah, the areas aren't usually big, but you can go anywhere you want and do whatever you want provided you have the power-ups for it.
Isn't that what an open-world game is?

No. That is the opposite of open world in the context of a video game. Requiring power-ups to go to places is an artificial barrier, and once you start throwing in artifical barriers, your world is no longer open. That's why games like Grand Theft Auto don't quite fit the designation of Open World, either.
Of course, this is why neither Metroid or Zelda would really work as an open world game, and would be difficult to excecute as a sandbox, because their entire formulae are based entirely on artificial barriers.
when I think of open world, games like Minecraft come to mind, where you can do whatever with the space you have.
but that's probably only because I never played many open world games.

I require a jacket and a boat to go to Antarctica.
nah, if you want to be hardcore all you need is to be alive and not worry about your health by the end of the trip.

Except ALL games have artificial barriers, meaning that "open-world" is a generous term
this gave me an idea!
pick Pacman, remove all the walls and the ghosts.
REAL OPEN WORLD GAME!!!!!!!!! the limit of the map on a side leads you to the oposite side! XD

i dont care what anyone says most zelda games have been open world. in that you can explore pretty much anywhere straight off the bat. yeah some places require items to progress further but if taking out these elements mean its truely open world i would much rather zelda stay as it is.

I don't agree with that. using that definition, what game is really open world? I can't think of a single game without any kinds of boundaries or barriers.

Yeah, I mean every game requires you to get something to get to some place. Even Mimecraft has a big boss for you to beat, that requires you to get items to reach it. Plus, if we get technical you need to get pickaxes of the right strength to reach someplaces. With your definition there is pretty much no such thing as an open world game really. According to your definition there is no such thing as an open-world game, and if that were the case it wouldn't be a genre, them we wouldn't be able to talk about it.
Now, I think there's a arguable difference to real open world, and metroidvania and whatnot.
