Topic: Do you think Nintendo EAD should open up a western studio?

I feel like part of the reason Nintendo can sometimes feel out of touch with the west is that they have so few development teams in the west. They just have Retro and NST. What if EAD formed a division in the US, similar to how SCE has a Santa Monica studio?

Why does it have to be on the US? But yes, I agree they should branch out and increase their game development overseas. EAD Europe, EAD Oceania and EAD America would be swell.

That would be kinda cool, actually. They could locate it in the NoA HQ, similair to EAD in Japan.

Sorry, since I've lived in the US my whole life I accidentally have a more US-centric way of thinking. It could be anywhere in the west.

And yeah, it really pisses me off how stubborn Nintendo is about this. Remember how Miyamoto used to see some ideas Rare had and copied them? What ever happened to that? I feel if Nintendo had a western studio, the NSMB and Mario Party franchises would actually bother to have online, we might see more US-centric games, maybe even the first WRPG on a Nintendo system.

But it wouldn't be similar at all?

Sony's Studio output is divisionized by regions The SCE stands for Sony Computer Entertainment which is the name of the games division. A new western studios wouldn't have the EAD name. At best they could name them all NST insert title here.

But to your point yeah Nintendo should invest in building or aquriing more first party studios in the west. But at the same time this is the same company that has NST a studio that started out making the gamecube Wave Race and 1080 has been demoted to a Mario vs Donkey kong factory, so my hopes fr western nintendo branches would be low.

Its also a bit telling that Nintendo didn't decide to jump into the bidding when THQ and 38 studios both died and had their developers and IP auctioned off.

WAT!

Nintendo kind of does that in a way. They have EAD separated into EAD Tokyo and EAD Kyoto, both of which have multiple development teams. I don't see why they can't open up a new EAD Seattle or something.

Well that's true I think you'd want a studio to have its own identity than to co-op another one. Plus a western studio most likely wouldn't be making the same type of games we get from EAD. Look at Sony or Microsoft developer staple for an example.

It would be a waste of space, because they could just give more to Retro Studios (aka the best option).

Wow, I never realized how little diversity Nintendo had.

Let's be honest Vigil should have been bought and either intergreted with Retro Studio or working alone under Retro Austin or something.

While they aren't Nintendo subsidiaries, don't forget about Next Level Games (e.g. Mario Strikers, Punch Out Wii, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon) and Monster Games (e.g. Pilotwings Resort, Excitebots, Excitetruck).

These western studios crank out some great games for Nintendo, though it'd be nice to get some of the non-Nintendo franchise games like we used to see from "2nd parties" like Factor 5, Silicon Knights and Left Field Productions. Hard to imagine games like MGS, Eternal Darkness, NBA Courtside and Star Wars published by Nintendo these days, but it seemed like these teams made some good western appeal games in their N64/Gamecube heydays.

Oh I certainly haven't forgot about them, but they don't have the influence on Nintendo Japan that full subsidiaries do. Remember how Miyamoto actually copied Rare's idea for the graphical style of the DKC series? Or how Nintendo actually got jealous of Rare's platformers? Even with Retro, I feel like there is a back and forth nature where Nintendo learns some things from Retro and vice versa.

This is what bugs me, why can't NoJ just let NoE and NoA set up there own development studios. I know NoE has NERD, but they could be put to better use.
To be honest NoA and NoE should be pushing for these things to happen. That't two thirds of Nintendo global operations not living up to potential.

This. Plus it just brings more games to the table even if it's just a Eshop game it could really help

I'd be excited if NoA started actually doing something other than marketing the latest Mario game and lazily publishing everything else.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
