Topic: Do you find it difficult to "Take it easy" on others in video games?

I have a 10 yr old nephew that I play games with sometimes and I have trouble taking it easy on the little guy. He's a novice at most things, but at least he's a Pokemon Master.

Whenever we play games in VS mode, he either doesn't really focus on the goal and gets lost in doing his own thing, or he tries, gets knocked down a peg or two and quickly gives up (not kicking and screaming mind you, he just accepts defeat long before the game ends and it really ruins the experience and takes all the fun out of it.) I try to take it easy on him, but sometimes I have to literally sit there and do NOTHING and wait for him to do something pertaining to the task at hand. And eventually I have to beat him just so the game can end or at least feel like it was a game at all.

The game in question here is Pikmin 3. He just wastes the majority of his time harvesting the pikmin rather than hunting for the treasures and so I kinda get left there feeling like I'm playing the game by myself.

Do you have a friend or relative that makes it difficult for you to "take it easy" on them? If so, what game?

Not really for the last question. But I do find it hard to take it easy on Brawl. One day a friend of a family friend passed by to play and my brother urged me to calm down on difficulty or I would discourage the aforementioned friend from playing Super Smash Bros. ever again.

Yet there are games where losing is just NOT fun: most of them actually. I only know Mario Kart to make it interesting for those who already know they're not playing at competitive levels.

Is he the one initiating these versus games, or are you? it doesn't sound like he's very interested in versus play from what you're saying...

if he is the one initiating versus games and he keeps getting sidetracked, perhaps you could try helping him in his quest to collect all the pikmin if that's what he's wanting to do? perhaps he's a perfectionist at heart :3

Dude, when I used to play Kirby air ride with my siblings, we took nothing seriously. Even on Air Ride mode, we'd just see where we could go as opposed to actually racing. Fond memories...

I go easy on someone after I actually see them play, I've fallen for the ole "I'm bad at this game, so go easy on me" far too many times.

YES!!! Example is a friend of mine if we play multiplayer games I usually take things seriously and then he just starts goofing around, I also have this tendency to look around and explore my environment while he just runs right through it. It grinds my gears a bit but in the end we still fun. The only game we really have both taken seriously is Wild Guns but even then we only got to the final stage and it was too hard for us to beat it (highly recommend it for 2 player gameplay it's amazing).

Did anyone take Kirby Air Ride seriously? I don't even know how much my siblings and I played on the Free Run City Trial thing. It was a lot considering there's not too much to do on there, but it was so fun for some reason.
It wasn't until recently when I started enjoying actually playing the game.

It was me that initiated the multiplay in the Pikmin instance. But this happens in all games with him.

That's sweet though, perhaps he is a little perfectionist. He is freaking OBSESSED with Pokemon, and I think his "gotta catch em all" tendencies from that carried over into Pikmin lol.

Haha, that reminds me of my days of playing tactical shooters with some old friends of mine. Sadly though, I think I'm more like your friend, I was a gung ho run and gunner. I ran in guns a blazing all the time haha.

I never take it easy on anyone, even on little kids who don't know what they're doing. I figure they'll learn from watching me..

Not really. I like to let the little guys win, that gives them some confidence and makes them want to play more. Works like a charm, my niece is now better than me at most Mario games.

it depends... normally it's easy but if they get anoying I destroy all their hopes of winning. EVER.
of course that's if we're talking about people who aren't very good at the game(whatever game it is). because if I feel that they're good or that they don't want to win with "a little help", I'll play with all I've got.

well if it's Pikmin, then you could play together the Mission Mode, so you can guide him through little tasks that he can accomplish to help you, rather than compete - so the knowledge he gets from playing Mission mode will make him understand Bingo Battle better.

I usually try to take it as easy as I possibly can. I have a 7 years old niece and a 4 years old nephew, they're sister and brother and we often play Mario Kart together. The little lad, bless him, can't complete a lap. It takes patience, I know, but in these situations I really don't care if I'm having fun or not, I'm all focused in seeing if he is having fun. I mean, I definitely don't play with them to experience the thrills of high-stakes competition. He seems to have fun just dying every other second...so be it.
Same goes with my 30+ years old non-gaming friends who visit me once in a while to play Wii or WiiU. I find it terribly impolite to win every match just because I'm more experienced or I have the game and they don't. So in these cases, I think, you have to understand what the other person finds fun to play and just create situations where he/she has fun - the rest doesn't matter. With football games is particularly easy because you can deliberately screw up a lot of things and still it doesn't look like you're helping them.

I don't think I have played a local multiplayer game competitively since 1999, I think it was Winning Eleven 3 against my brother. We used to bet loads of cash on that thing.

Sort of. I don't find it so difficult to take it easy when people I know are playing a game badly, but I seriously can't watch many online videos of games easily because I find myself distracted every time the person in the video screws up (which considering the online media, is pretty much every ten minutes).

as off-topic as they seem, lz and LJM do kinda bring up a good point — if you continually beat the hell out of your opponents, they may decide that it's no fun playing against you. i know i tend to go easy on people when i think they're having a hard time, but don't be surprised when they come outta nowhere and whoop you while your guard is down, lol. :3
