Okay, first let me explain my particular situation. My mom is the type of person that likely wouldn't let me keep more then one video game console (excluding my portable 3DS). With the Wii and 3DS being my first actual systems (most of my younger life was PC) I can't tell for sure, but knowing my mom I bet she probably wouldn't be thrilled with the idea. So anyway, along with that is the price. While I agree that it's quite reasonable for what you get (I'm planning on going with the deluxe) it is still rather expensive for a teenager with no income at the moment.

My biggest hope is that I could get it for Christmas, and I'll even say that all my family can pitch in a little per each person and only give me that for one single present and nothing else, since we don't usually go big with presents. But should that fail, I'm pretty much on my own.

So my questions are:
Can you transfer disk save data between systems, like say can I transfer my save data of SSBB from the Wii to Wii U? (Btw, I know you can transfer downloaded games and that the Wii U is backwards compatible).
Overall, should I keep or sell my Wii? I know many like to keep previous consoles, but I'm not sure if I want to, plus I could use the money towards Wii U should the Christmas plan not work out.

I'm not sure about transferring data for something like SSBB - Nintendo wouldn't let you make backups of the save file on the Wii (I guess for fear of tampering) so I don't know how they'll handle it.

If you don't use the GC backwards compatibility I'd say sell the Wii, but you may not get much money for it. If you have zero reason to hang on to it, sure, get rid of it. Since the Wii U will play Wii games, there wouldn't be any reason to hang on to the old console (apart from the aforementioned GC BC)

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

They said you need to keep your wii to transfer, but after the transfer you'll probably be able to sell it just tell your mom that's what you need to do first

I'm keeping my Wii mostly for the GameCube games. Also, I don't have four Wii Remotes to pass around to my friends when we play Brawl so the GCN controllers in the Wii will be helpful. Not to mention, at GameStop, it'll only knock off an additional $50 and I'm assuming that's with all the accessories (especially the Wii Remote and Nunchuck) so going without those may prove to be useless.

If you really need the extra cash, trade it in. Otherwise, keep your Wii. It'll bring back good memories later on and you'll be able to buy all the gems when other people that trade it in trade in games, too.

Of course. I'm in no rush at the moment (in fact I'm moving sometime this month). I don't have any GameCube stuff whatsoever, so that area doesn't matter to me. If I can't get at least more then $50-$100 out of selling it, I'll likely just keep it if I have the option and if my Christmas plan works. I guess losing the save data won't be all that bad, it could be a good reason to replay all my old games while I await the time when I can buy new ones! :D

Well if you need the extra cash you could trade it in but if it is a Wii with the Gamecube parts you might want to keep it, even if you have a Gamecube. The reason being some games like Mario Kart Wii, Goldeneye and a few others have an option that you can use a GC controller to control the game. Also VC games make use of the GC controller so if you want that option keep your Wii.

As for you mother you can explain to her that the Wii U doesn't play Gamecube (yes its a rumor right now but there is no word one way or the other) and if you want to still be able to play Gamecube games or have a Gamecube library than getting rid of the Wii wouldn't be plausible. Besides even if they do put GC games to the Wii U VC we should have all learned from the Wii VC that not every game will be released for the VC.

Well like I've said, I don't have any Gamecube games, controllers, ect. For VC games I use the Classic Controller, and that's good enough for me.

If it just your game saves, I expect you should be able to transfer them onto a SD card on the Wii. And then put that SD card in the Wii U and transfer them onto the Wii U system.

The Smash Bros file will cause a problem though, because of the online component

I'll probably get a Wii U, transfer my data, then sell my old Wii at a flea market so I can have some money. Then I'll give my Gamecube stuff to my cousin.

Rest in Peace ShiftyLook

I don't think selling your Wii would yield much at all. And you'll need all your Wii remotes for the Wii U, as it only comes with the game pad. Don't think they'd be many buyers for a Wii without any Wii remotes.

Alright. Edit. I can't do it tomorrow because Dad doesn't know the difference either. After I have a heated debate about it with him, I might be able to do it. Let's just hope people don't get any smarter until then.
