Topic: Do i need a game pad?

This might be a ridiculously stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway. In the interest of saving money, I've found a pretty cheap refurbished wii u with all the vital components (charging, hdmi, sensor) EXCEPT the gamepad. The gamepad adds like an additional 100-180 dollars and the only reason we (we being my dorm mates and I) are thinking of getting a wii u is to play smash 4. So do we need a gamepad even if we have our own wii controllers and gamecube controllers if it's just to play smash? Or do we need a gamepad anyway for initial setup etc.? Thank you

@Kimjongswoon Yeah, you need it. It's definitely required for the initial set-up, and I also believe that it's required for some other things. You can play Smash without the GamePad, but that doesn't really answer your question. In summary, if you want a Wii U, you need the GamePad.

You could probably sell the gamepad after initial setup though.

I believe System Settings is the only thing that only navigates with the gamepad. I know activity log only shows detailed info on the gamepad but it still works with out.

Maybe you could just borrow one if you need it to set up your system.

Wii U would have been more successful if they did a software update to make the game pad optional. Only a few games require two screens.
