Okay, and I also assume if I buy the 3.0 edition that's on the Eshop, I would only be able to play the basic toybox thing, right? Or would there be a mode that actually has a flowing set of objectives/story?

It would only be the Toybox stuff until you buy Playsets or Toy box Expansion games.

I just really liked the concept and the figures designs, and I was hoping for a nice little game to play.. but so far it seems like it's sort of half assed as far as the actual gameplay goes. The graphics are decent, the animations are good, but I'm having a hard time figuring out where the actual game is. So far it seems like the only actual game lies in the playsets. I've tried some of the community content.. but I couldn't find any good ones.

For $30 you get the Toy box and the base mechanics of the game. In the Toy Box you can download Community created levels. If you purchase Playsets (normally about $35 and comes with 2 character figures) you get professionally designed levels and sequences. If you are wanting professionally designed levels, either look for the best Toy Box creators or purchase the Playsets. Either way the base game will be required.

Have you played the toybox takeover or speedway? They look like they might be cool, but I'm still a bit skeptical.
I played Toybox Takeover and it is pretty awesome. You get to use any character. It is focused on combat. I didn't get too far in it but what I played I liked.

Did anyone watch the Stream of the new stuff coming to Disney Infinity? I was unable to watch
I did, and it looks like some really good updates and additions to the game. I would definitely recommend it if you can get your hands on it. Kinda got me and the kids back into DI. Plus the overall updates to the game itself seemed to have helped stabilize it a bit more.
@scubydo: I have caught up on most of the info I think. There will not be Disney Infinity 4 this year, instead they will continue to release playsets and new characters. And each of their main 4 series will get new playset this year: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars

@DefHalan Yeah, I think this is great personally for my wallet. Since we are trying to collect all the characters and we are only about half way. But with all the sales, and the flooded market now, I don't think it will be too hard for us to get them all. Plus, we are getting the battlegrounds and the newer characters on release day. Given I get to the stores in time.
@scubydo: lucky you. I haven't been able to collect 3.0 characters as fast as I wish I could because of some financial problems but I have gotten all 1.0 and 2.0 characters. I am also really excited for Battlegrounds. Hopefully I will be able to get it this week. I have seen it for $20 some places.

I went into Toys R Us and they still had pre-orders available with the $20 price guarnteed, so I will be picking Marvel Battlegrounds up from TRU today. I know the big draw for it is the multiplayer, but there is a single player, right?

Yes, it has a single player campaign style mode. You still battle in the arenas but with a story that progresses through the 8+ arenas. I just picked up all the new characters and battlegrounds this morning. Will try to play later and let you know what is involved in the story mode.
