I've been researching Disney Infinity a bit and I'm somewhat interested in getting it. The whole thing is a little confusing to me, so I was hoping someone here could answer some of my questions.
First off, what is the incentive to buy extra characters? Obviously aside from the fact that you can play as your favorite character from a franchise, do the figures actually play significantly differently?
Buying different characters just lets you play as those characters. Each character is slightly different but outside of just collecting, I don't think it is very important to own them all.
And finally, if you download the game digitally do you need to go out and buy figures to be able to play if you don't already own any?
You do need to own a figure to play the game. If you don't have any figures then you don't have any playable characters. That is basically why the digital version is so cheap.

@DefHalan: Oh sorry, I know it's just one of those little power disc things, meaning both Takeover and racing are already in the game DL and the $20 power discs are basically unlock keys. Or as we like to call them, amiibo. Good thing "hardcore" gamers don't play DI or else they would be really freaking out that a $65 game has 2 parts on disc that require 2 unlock discs that cost $20 each.
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
@rjejr: If you are wanting to make that comparison then you would have to do that for all the characters as well. The main drawn for Disney Infinity is Toy Box and that is what you get for $20-$30. Then $35 for a playset and 2 characters. The Toy Box expansions are $20 and they have confirmed those expansions use tools that players do not have access to in the Toy Box.
Also your comment about "hardcore" gamers isn't needed. (after thinking about this, you might have meant it as a joke... if so, sorry)
I have played a bit with 3.0 and think it's really fun . I do think loading from disc is a bit slow, it would have been better with an eshop version I think.
Lust I played was 1.0 and the combat has evolved quite a bit, I also liked the swap character mechanic. I haven't seen any Wii U specific reviews yet .
Well 3.0 begins for me. I saw a Toy Box Take Down expansion marked incorrectly and so I got it for $13. It is just a power disc similar to the Stitch & Merida power discs from 2.0. I haven't played it yet. I also got a Yoda figure. No Playsets yet

@ThePirateCaptain: Correct. I am not sure if you can download people's toy boxes from different systems but maybe
I do know with 2.0 I was able to download a friends toy box creation he had made with his Xbox, the toy boxes are cross-platform just like the characters and playsets. So far, we are really enjoying 3.0's additions and upgrades they did to the overall gameplay. Very much improved from 2.0....1.0 was good, and 2.0 left us missing something even the playsets felt empty, but 3.0 seems to fix a lot of the issues that everyone was hoping would be fixed. Not that it doesn't have its problems. But again overall, it is great! Now, I just have to try and track down the rest of the 1.0 and 2.0 characters that we need, I have 42 of 91 characters all together so far.
@scubydo: Good Luck. Amazon has some but trying to track down the Incredibles figures gets expensive
EDIT: I am downloading 3.0 while at work. I already have the Yoda and Toybox Takeover. Will be interesting to see what I can do. Hopefully the Clone Wars Playset is available on its own soon. My wife really wants that Ahsoka figure.
I downloaded Disney Infinity 1.0 - Wii U for free over this past weekend & was just curious. I like the game but is the point of it to try to collect as many Disney Infinity characters as you can? (I also picked up the Wii U Disney Infinity Base)
I also bought Disney Infinity 1.0 - 3DS.
Personally I just bought the Disney Infinity 1.0 characters I really wanted which are:
Rapunzel
Vanellope
Anna
Elsa
I also got the 3 that came with my 3DS game:
Sulley - Monster's Inc
Incredable's
Pirate Of Caribbean
Just curious. Never played Disney Infinity Before... The person at GS assured me if I pick up 2.0 & 3.0 the Base for the Wii U will work with all 3 Disney Infinity versions on Wii U.
For those looking to pick up 1.0 characters. I had I heck of a time tracking these down over the weekend & GS was not a huge help neither. I called Toys R US they have 1.0 Disney Characters if anyone is looking for the 1.0 characters!
Happy Gaming! (^_^)
I saw your new thread byt fogured I would respond in this thread. Have you played any Playsets? I find a lot of the fun is in those Playsets. Downloading people's toy box levels can also be fun but there is a lot of bad that you have to navigate through to find the good. Currently I am playing through all my Playsets (have played all the Marvel ones and Currently going through DI1 playsets) and after all that I am going to give the Toy Box a shot and create my own levels. It might be a while lol.
Good luck collecting the DI1 figures you want. Some can be difficult to find.

@Barbiegurl777:
Playsets are those crystal pieces that don't look like characters. They are fully designed experiences made by professionals and have a story you progress through. They are a lot of fun

@Barbiegurl777: Exactly, that one has the Monster's University, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles playsets all in one. For Disney Infinity 1 there is also Toy Story, Cars, and Lone Ranger playsets.

Everything has been upgraded but combat and driving have been specifically targeted by hiring developers that specialize in those areas.
Combat = Ninja Theory
Driving = Sumo Digital
