Do i need the villains or sidekick pack to do local multiplayer ?
No, you just need at least 2 figures. One for you and one for whoever you're playing with at home.
Unless you want to play a specific play set, then you're gonna need 2 figures of the same franchise. Like if you want to do local multiplayer in Monster University play set, then you can only play as Sully, Mike, or Randall. Sully comes with the starter kit, so you will need to buy either Mike or Randall for the second player to join you.

@tovare Yep. and even though you need characters from the same franchise for their play set (story mode) to play together , you can play the Toy Box Mode with characters from different franchises at the same thing, such as Sulley and Mr. Incredible.

Just downloaded the fre Disney Infinity Action app. I guess it's for recording videos, but I thought you could take pictures or somethign too. Not sure if I understand it or how to get coins in it but I just started.

Still can't seem to find a list of the items you start out with to build with. I saw the number 250 or so, but I can't seem to find a list. Anybody?? I'm particular hoping to start with Scrooge's money bin.

COMES OUT TOMORROW!.... But I probably won't pick it up...
I will later on when Wreck-It Ralph, Toy Story, and others become available, but in the meantime I will be collecting some of the toys so I can have a bunch of things to play with when I do get the game later on.
Havent seen launch wibes like this in a while, and the game hasn't even been reviewed yet. this is crazier than wow. Cabage doll magnitude at christmass is my guess.
