Topic: Did Nintendo make Mario 3D world look rubbish because...

...Sonic Lost Worlds was coming out before it. Just think about it for a second, most of the stuff we've been seeing for Sonic looks really good and there's been a fair few trailers, screenshots and pre-order incentives for it. Then the latest direct comes out and BOOM, all of a sudden Mario 3D World doesn't look so bad after all. You guys think I'm on to something or should I lay off of the diesel oil?

I think everything Nintendo makes looks rubbish.
but that's just me.

I have this theory the game started development as a sequel of 3d land for the 3DS and when they realized 3DS was o.k and Wii U was in desperate needs of exclusives decided to simply upscale the game and release it as a Wii U exclusive

This. My thoughts exactly.

I think what actually happened is that they made the assumption that it just being Mario was enough to generate hype at E3. Not realising that everyone was expecting the next big Mario title. What we got at the Nintendo Direct was partially a correction of that and partially what they would have planned all along. Get the hype out early, show finer details as you get closer. They did the same thing with all of their games at E3, they just underestimated what people's expectations were.

If its a choice between conspiracy and stuff-up/miscalculation always go for the latter.

Nintendo would never try to purposely make their products look "rubbish". It's all up to the consumers what they think looks bad, and for some reason the majority seemed to agree that 3D World is complete trash based off its original reveal trailer.

Game graphics are usually the last thing that gets done in a development process. Devs use pre-existing resources like models and textures as placeholders during the process so demo's and previews will often have rough edges.

I heard this one many times, but I still can't understand how people think that it started as a 3DS game.
From purely financial point of view, releasing a sequel would be irrational. Mario games have extremely long legs and 3D Land is still selling well, so it would only overshadow it, along with other 3DS games (and a WiiU mainline Mario, as NSMB series isn't that).
From the technical aspect, it would make even less sense, as "upscaling" a game is the most pointless and time/cost consuming thing ever. You can downscale a game, but making it better, with a lot more polygons, new shaders (different shaders in this case, as 3DS is very different), better textures, improved lighting (shadow levels would have to be done in a different way on the 3DS since it can't handle those shadows) is like making a second game. Nintendo would have to be really incompetent to do a thing like that.

I see a good game chockablock and filled to the brim with awesome gameplay. The same can be said for Sonic Lost World... The PSBOX wishes they had real games like this

I think it looked really good at E3, but the latest trailer just confirmed how fun it's going to be. I think everyone is being a little hard on the E3 video, but that's just me. There was no doubt in my mind 3D World would be great at release, and I still don't have any doubt.

As far as the Sonic theory goes, they probably wouldn't have showed the awesome 3D World trailer until a week or two after Sonic's release if they didn't want to take away from it. Both games are going to sell well though, and both games are going to help the Wii U a great deal this holiday season.

No, I just think they didn't have enough interesting stuff going on in the game when they had to do the E3 trailer, so they put what they had at the moment. The E3 trailer is very bland and shows little to no ideas. Also, the pacing of the E3 trailer is very slow and boring, so we all automatically assumed the game was going to be crap. The new trailer, however, shows a lot of cute ideas, the pacing is faster and there's a lot of action and nuances going on and more variety - we don't just see the characters roaming around a generic, bland, 3D Mario environment.

All of these games started their life as remakes (WWHD only at places). Both NSMBU and OoT3D have new models, textures and other elements remade from the ground up. Pikmin 3 started development on Wii and look how much time it took Nintendo to switch systems and update the game.
Unless Nintendo says that it started on the 3DS, there is absolutely nothing rational behind that statement.
