I think it is nice from a perspective that the system really needs something exclusive like this, but you have to admit - the visuals and gameplay looked a little rough. I'm sure they will work on refining those things toward the end, but the state we saw it in was kinda janky. The multiplayer does look different, though, and for a game like this a good deal of players will spend most of their time there.

I agree that the game needs some work, but even as is, I'd probably like it more than any other "traditional" shooter game. It makes me think of the style of gameplay that MGS Online(PS3) had, except a bit more ridiculous, with more swords, and you can do a great deal more with the customization.

It makes sense to me why Nintendo funded this game.

I'm not following the dissent this game is getting. It looks fine, or at least as good as it needs to offer blazingingly fast, silky smooth action. A game like Black Flag looks great but plays like a turd squirming out of a butthole. I'd much rather they polish up the gameplay, controls, responsiveness, and level design.

Either way, this is a multiplayer-focused action game. A truly rare breed for Nintendo consoles. Moreover, it includes a impressive degree of customization, an abundance of modes, and even a level editor. There very well may never be another Wii U release like it (holding out hope for Timesplitters 4, but I'd likely have a better chance actually splitting time then ever playing that game)... So I'm saying we should rally behind this for now in hopes of Valhalla pulling through. This is our one great hope of shredding each other into meat this generation and I see no reason to dismiss it based upon what little we have seen (which, honestly, looks rather promising).

This is a big game in a lot of ways. It will play a significant role in either luring or keeping the interest of violence-oriented gamers. More importantly, Nintendo is clearly making a belated push towards online multiplayer and this is the kind of gap-filler you absolutely need for that crowd to stay engaged. Not to mention, there is a reasonable chance of it being a cult classic.

For instance, compare it to aforementioned Timesplitters and you'll notice some similarities that hint at serious potential to fill that void. TS had serviceable graphics, terrible single player, generic characters/setting, etc... However, the multitude of modes and options, the level editor, the cool weapons, and most importantly, the smooth, fluid gameplay were enough to assert itself as a worthy time-waster and a multiplayer classic. Before the first game released, there was little reason to be hyped beyond pedigree. To me, The Devil's Third shares many of those ethics with a drastically different inspiration and intent.

Given all that, I just hope they can nail the goofy, gory tone. The drums in the trailer give me confidence they can (seriously, that was only there to drive home the ridiculousness of it all to prevent viewers from confusing it as something serious.. And I ate it up). But there are other aspects that do give me pause (yes, those tats are absurd, is that suppose to be his last will and testament... Or what?).

This. It looks pretty good for a game that will hopefully keep what I'm assuming to be 60fps. In the trailers it seems there was frame dip occasionally so who knows what's going on there or whether it's intended to be fixed by release. Curiously enough there were no references to a release date. If they were willing to show off multiplayer however, it must be pretty darn close to finished. In particular, I have high hopes for the game's multiplayer, but it's zany nature and a crazy cool number of variables will make it a challenge to balance. I don't mean balance as in super competitive MLG but just enough so not any one thing will be ridiculously overpowered and can be challenged.

Apparently the game switched engines just recently which would explain why it looks so rough right now.

Game looks terrible not only from a visual direction but from a art direction scale as well. The game just looks so much worse than Ninja Gaiden 2 and it chalks up to being very Japanese action game with a somewhat charmingly terrible art style.

The 2010 trailer doesn't look that great either.

The game from the visuals to the menu design reminds me of a late PS2 early Xbox 360 action game and I love it and hate it all at the same time.

Meh. I doesn't look that bad. As long as it's more fun than CoD, I'm pretty sure we can cut it some slack.

This is another reason why I'm glad this game is coming in 2015. It needs polish and help. The game looks incredibly interesting and I will totally buy it. I totally support Nintendo when they do stuff like this.
It helps diversify the Wii U's library, too.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Looks like it could be a nice antidote to the typical brown/grey shooters you see from Western developers - the goofy multiplayer customisation is an especially welcome breath of fresh air as is having online clans battling for turf rather than achievements - I might actually have some incentive to try online play for a change!

Excellent Polygon article and interview with Itagaki about The Devil's Third. It's a worthy read, very illuminating and even quite promising. This game is akin to a comic book.

Wish I had more time to talk about it, but I'm very busy today.

A comic book by Avatar Press or Zenoscope maybe.

@Sean_Aaron

The game seems pretty grey and brown to me. Doesn't grey and brown correlates to a lot of shooters taking place in the middle east which is pretty brown and grey. I mean Halo, Titanfall, Killzone, and the new Battlefield are hardly what I consider grey.

I hope the game draws the line between so bad its good in the plot and actual good in the story.

Nice article. The more I learn about this game the more ridiculous it sounds and by ridiculous I mean fantastic!

Also, it's interesting to go back and read some of the history of the development of this game like Devil's Third budget almost equal to all of Itagaki's previou...

I wonder if only the first game is in development. I remember when the game was announced and it was so supposed to be a three game series cross media project which is why many thought Microsoft would pick it up. I don't think the live action stuff is still on the table despite it probably being awesome.

Also I wonder if Nintendo will acquire Valhalla Games Studio, they aren't really getting any other offers like Platnuim and I would think it would be pretty cheap buy for a develop that can make stuff happen on a short time table. (Devils third was hurt by having to switch engines and THQ falling.)

I think those games are "dumb" generally and they do tend to be pretty drab - I'm thinking mainly of the urban combat settings used by the modern warfare games when I'm referring to those colour terms. Sub whatever you like though: I think "boring" and "crap" are also an apt pair of descriptors. The point is that using something other than the monotone in-game character models that you normally see will be interesting.

Well boring and crap tend to estimate those game aren't well made which they are. While I'm not a big fan of the mono tone color you can't really play game in I mean none of the games are really drab.

I like playing Gears of War and Halo, but that's basically it. Splatoon and this will probably change that. These games Nintendo are making and funding are different, for the better, IMO.

Depends on how you define "well made" - Call of Duty Black Ops had a single player story that made Goldfinger look like a documentary, it was so ludicrous. I played the multiplayer online for about a month before it wore out its welcome - making those maps any bigger wouldn't have made them any less boring or more colourful than they were(n't).

Ultimately those kinds of games all look the same: I couldn't tell you which is Call of Duty versus Battlefield or even Titanfall (non-mech piloting, obviously) if you showed me in-game footage for five minutes. This title won't have that issue because you won't be controlling a floating gun the whole time, fighting against rejects from Rainbow Six. That right there will take things to a new level!
