Has anyone played Darksiders 2?

I read something describing it as Zelda wannabe with an open world which has caught my attention but I’m really put off by the overly muscle-bound graphic style.

It's...okay. The combat is fun and feels very fluid, with dodging at the center, but the general lack of enemy types, VERY small amount of items and skills, and a few puzzle mechanics that are reused throughout the game bring the experience down. And it's no more open world than Twilight Princess.

i really loved the first darksiders and enjoyed some of the second but it just sorta started feeling like a chore around halfway through i stopped playing and traded it back in eventually.

Does there seem to be enough variety with the game world and character designs beyond everything being muscle bound and gritty?

I love this game and it's predecessor. Loved the addition of loot, absolutely love the world and its lore, and I really hope a third game comes out, even though it won't be the same without the original devs. I'd say it's worth a go if you fancy a Zelda-style game with more of an edge.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the Lead Designer and Art Director for the game a couple of years ago, some real industry veterans from the Spectrum/C64 days!

I played it and had fun with it. My friend and I mentioned every game that it borrowed a mechanic from. Still, it is fun. Nice combat, well-off platforming when it's there, and a story that I'm pretty sure exists. Plus you're a cool guy.

Darksiders 2 is a lot of fun. Combat feels very satisfying, puzzles are really creative at times, and exploration is rewarded at a very good pace without deviating too far from the main target. The story requires some knowledge of the first game, but isn't incomprehensible without, while having enough interesting characters to keep it entertaining.
However, the enemy variety is very lacking, and quite a few parts of the overworld feel too stretched out. The inventory is messy and hard to manage at times, and especially heavy weapon types feel too similar in general. There are occasional camera and control issues, as well, but they're not common.

Sadly, with THQ's unceremonious end, the whole Darksider Project is currently in limbo, and sales figures of the first two games weren't exactly satisfying, either.

For the most part... no. It's deliberately gritty, to the point where even NPC's look like overcompensation at times.

Cheers! That kinda puts me off it but I may take a punt on it anyway.

I played for a while but stopped, but from from what I did it is very fun controlling the character, and looks like another very solid 3rd party game on the Wii U before they stopped.

I will say it can be described as a darker Zelda... But that's not fair because it's far from a Zelda clone. It's not for everyone, but it is a good game, I enjoyed it. Read some reviews if you're unsure, just don't go in expected M rated Zelda, it has similarities but plenty of its own character... And yes, it's gritty, can't deny that.

It's a fun game. Not anywhere near the league of a true Zelda game, but it's similar in structure.

Sadly, about four hours into it, I ran into a game-breaking bug and decided I didn't really want to restart it. I may go back into it some day, perhaps during the next dry spell.

I've been playing the first game and is Darksiders 2 the more Zelda-like one? Because so far, for all the talks of the series being Dark Zelda, it's closer to a Devil May Cry/God Of War like game with some Zelda elements kinda thrown in.

Great game, only problem I had with the game was the crashing. The variety in the level design is brilliant going to the 4 worlds (although the last two worlds are a little short in my opinion). The music is stellar and the voice acting is very well performed. You can probably find it on the cheap now too
