Cannot wait for Dark Souls 2, I don't get why people think it's too hard or something. You shouldn't be able too run thought a game with hundreds of lives, games should have some sort of challenge which is missing from a lot of games today. Not only that it's an excellent RPG, Demons Souls is still one of the best RPG's out there. You will spend hundreds of hours discovering everything, with loads of play throughs and each play through gets harder. What made Demons Souls unique is it's World Tendencies, which would effect the enemies strength the players stats in soul form. New enemies and passages may also appear at certain World Tendencies also so it has a lot of depth.

But is it fun? There are a lot of hidden areas with challenging moments in Mario games, the key difference to me is I find Mario fun, everyone I have ever talked to about these games has a hard time with the question, "is it fun?"

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Umm. Yes. If I were to make a list of games that I find fun and rewarding, Demon Souls and Dark Souls would be near the top. Yes, they can get aggravating when you're fighting what feels like an impossible boss or annoying enemies.. BUT, that's what makes it fun. The challenge and the sense of accomplishment when you beat a boss that has had it's way with you 10 times over. They're just amazing games. Obviously that doesn't appeal to some people, but for someone like me, it means everything. I love Mario games too though, Mario 3D World being one of my favorites. Champion Road was a great challenge and I have easily put hours of time into trying to beat that level with every character. That makes it my favorite level. When I beat it with Toad I just had one of those "YESSSSS!!!!" moments. I love it.

Easy games on the other hand, more or less leave me disappointed. Unless it's expected, sometimes the case with Zelda games, which I also love.

Not to mention Dark Souls has some of the best combat I've ever encountered in an RPG. If you lose a fight against a monster it really is your fault.

So would it be safe to draw a comparison to Contra? Really hard and challenging but still fun and rewarding?

Pretty strange comparison, but I suppose. Most of the fights you just have to go at again and again to understand what's going to happen and then you'll end up getting smashed anyway. A lot of games are easy because bosses are completely predictable while this game, the bosses do have a certain skill set, but they somehow managed to be unpredictable. There are also certain ways to completely wreck some bosses if you know how, but it isn't obvious, aside from a very few cases. The normal enemies themselves can be an extreme threat as well, but like Canis said, if you die.. it's really your fault for not being careful and not using your defenses carefully. You will still die a ton though just learning how to defend yourself against them. Once you learn this though, it feels very rewarding. It's just a great game and if you're even thinking you might like it, I'd try it. I'm sure you can find it decently priced. It's pretty dark as far as atmosphere and visuals go and it is actually really creepy and scary during some points, if you like that. I could go on, but I'll refrain.

The phrase "Nintendo hard" wasn't without merit. Nintendo, to this day, makes some of the most challenging games out there. Not everyone realizes this, but it's true. Now, obviously not ALL Nintendo games are tough. But I DARE ANYONE to beat Metroid Prime 2 Echoes final boss. That final boss is still the hardest I've ever played in my life. Fire Emblem games, all tough as nails. Donkey Kong Country games, hard as a rock. Even the Mario games can be extremely difficult to collect all 3 stars for every level. F-Zero, just ridiculous difficulty. I actually think it's the most difficult game ever made, right up there with Ghosts & Goblins. And Nintendo currently boasts the Monster Hunter franchise, which is also not exactly for the casual gamer.

I think Dark Souls 2 would be great on Wii U- I know I'd buy it. But I'm not sure how well it'd sell, right now anyways. Maybe in a few years after Wii U picks up some serious steam it could sell decently.

For me, the hardest boss in between Metroid Prime 1 & 2 (I'm still trying to get myself to complete the third one. Not that it's difficult, I just get really annoyed at the game. I had no problem playing through Other M, though.) was the Omega Pirate, especially on hard mode. Having to fight that guy, dodge the phazon pools and fight all the different space pirates requiring you to constantly switch weapons, phew.

The old DKC games are challenging, but Donkey Kong Country Returns is hard in the same way that the old Mega Man games are hard. They require you to learn the layout of the level, so you have to die over and over to learn what to avoid. To me, that's not a real challenge, that's a cheap challenge. Also, DKCR has some bad controls, so there were times when I would accidently roll instead of ground pounding or blowing, which was always annoying.

F-Zero games are ridiculously hard. I used to have F-Zero GX and, yeah, I never got very far in that game. It's like, you have to drive perfectly, which is hard because you're going really fast and the tracks are just crazy. I mean, it's kind of cool, but also ridiculously hard. And all the AI drivers are able to drive the crazy courses perfectly, making it that much harder to get 1st place.

Anyways, on topic, I've never played a Dark Souls game so I don't know anything about them. The developer doesn't want to put them on the Wii U? Okay. It's just another franchise I'll never know.

I noticed in a lot of MiIVerse comments on the NES Remix thing people complaining about how impossible they are. Particularly the Link Donkey Kong ones and the Donkey Kong with springs. Neither of which I've actually beaten yet. Then there's Donkey Kong Country Returns or the harder levels in one of the 3D Mario games. I even have Megaman sitting there at my fingertips on the eShop.

Compare that to say the most recent campaigns in games like CoD and I don't really buy the whole "Nintendo gamers like it easier" thing. Even Assassin's Creed which I love I play and I feel like I'm legendary at the game. Then I realise that most of the time I'm either pushing a direction on the control stick or executing quick time events.....

Eh. I've played the game. I've beat the game. I know what I'm talking about.

The original Donkey Kong Countries weren't repeatable? I always thought they were along with all of the platformers of that era. Sometimes you'd get a bit of variation if you took a bit longer on one area but speedruns and forced scrolling levels always had you hitting the same spots. Even then it's still not as hand-holdey, easy and repeatable as some of the headliners people label as "hardcore".

Plus even when I've played a level in a hard platformer ten times and know exactly what to do I still die on that same bit over and over again. Same can't be said of the third party AAA blockbusters which are about cinematics at the expense of any sort of real challenge. I mean if we're talking about the various platforms varying appetite for challenge how well did Cloudberry Kingdom do on the Wii U vs other platforms?

I'm not saying they're perfect, but I've played quite a bit of Megaman and I've played DKCR to 100% (outside of art unlockables and mirror mode) and those problems are...rarely to never in those games. At least Megaman 1-3, which I'm more familiar with. Or at least keeps it to a minimal compared to other comparable platformers.

I think Rayman Origins was the worst I've seen in that regard for a long, long time. Donkey Kong Country Returns was comparatively pretty good. You only really noticed it in the rocket stages but outside of that it wasn't really something I came across. Maybe I just didn't die enough in those parts of the game to see it?

I know doing the speed-runs in the some of the levels in DKCR was ridiculous. Specifically the levels you unlock by getting all the puzzle pieces(?) in that zone. Loved those levels because you knew that you were in for it. The K levels.

Oh yeah, I didn't even fully realize until I did everything in that game "wow is this embarassingly trial and error at points". Legends isn't great at that or anything but it is still better than those parts of Origins easily.

Those cart levels were pretty jacked in DKCR. I lost around 10 lives based on trial and error, then I got a 7 up at the end of the level. Trial and error is pretty iffy. Video games actually used to be more based on trial and error as far as I can tell. Those "hand holding" tutorials don't even matter if you can't do it anyway.

As for Dark Souls 2. I can see why it won't show up on Wii U, so I'm not one to judge any party involved. I'm surprised that a game like this would ever be published on anything besides PC in the first place.
