I thought i'd make a list of currently available online games so people know what is available to play with other like minded players if they want to. As you will see quite a decent number of Wii U titles are online but 1st party online games are few. In fact there have been no retail 1st party games with online play since launch, this trend will end with Mario Kart 8 in May followed by Smash, X (maybe Hyrule Warriors) and hopefully more down the line.
I don't own all these games and i may have missed some out so please let me know if i have messed up somewhere.

I relly don't play online multiplayer in any of these that much.
From the recent videos of the Wii U version, hardly anyone is online, you'd be better of getting Golden Eye on the Wii instead... Although to level up takes forever. Took me 4 days worth of online play just to get to level 34
Nintendo Network ID: sgt.taffy
Currently playing - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Seriously, that is unbelievable Nintendo.
I don't know why it's "unbelievable". It's not like any of the major games they've put out for Wii U have been crying out for online. Plus even the ones that would never work with it have had MiiVerse integration, ghost data, DLC, patches and so on.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
Nintendo published Tekken Tag and Ninja Gaiden 3, both have online but the most surprising thing was how quickly I found a game with NG3. Also, the big daddy, Mario Kart will be launching soon and will no doubt have its own channel and ghost sharing, online races and more.
It's not at retail but Wii Tennis online is absolutely amazing. The matching system isn't quite there yet but they've managed to eliminate 99% of the lag. I don't think there has ever been a better online sports game. Nintendo should have advertised the hell out of this.
I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.
Black Ops 2 peaks at around 2,000 players now and used to peak at around 3,000 before Ghosts was released. Every time I've asked Ghosts players how many are online, they've said 2,000 or less. I think either game has enough people to warrant playing on Wii U but I've not heard much good said about Ghosts.

Oh, I got Goldeneye for Wii when it released and I played it online a lot. I was actually pretty high ranked, at one point in time. Less than 500 (out of tens of thousands). And, yes. It takes way too long to level up in that game. I think that game was unfinished.
I was surprised NSMBU and 3D World didn't have online co-op modes.
I wasn't.
Yeah. Bouncing off of each other's heads is enough of a hassle locally. If I can't smack my co-op buddy when they lob me off the edge for the umpteenth time, I'd rather not have online to begin with.
Now, Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros online are going to be great.

Ha. Yeah. I just meant I wasn't surprised because Nintendo has a history of dragging their feet when it comes to incorporating online. But, you're right. There would be a lot of jerks online who just purposely push people off ledges. What would've been good, though, would have been some sort of online battle mode, similar to the original Mario Bros. Not similar as in the same gameplay, but that although you're kind of working together, you're also kind of working against each other.
Mario Kart 8 I have no doubt will nail the online. Mario Kart Wii had great online. Not once have I ever been able to get MK7 to connect, though.
I'm really hoping Smash 4 Wii U will have just as good online as Mario Kart. Brawl's online is terrible. And for those who say they've had lagless games in Brawl, you remember how Sakurai said that if a player got disconnected they would seamlessly be replaced by AI? So, for all you know, you could've just been playing against the computer and thinking you were playing online.

I got Ghosts at my brothers request and i must say that for multiplayer its awesome. I'm not a fan of multiplayer versus (i never do deathmatch) but Safeguard (Survival/horde mode) and Extinction (Zombies with Aliens but arguably better) modes are very fun (local or online) and totally justify the purchase.
