As some people have already stated, there are some 3DS Mii hats that you can get. But onto the "Buying Items For Your Mii" topic, I would say that the least of what Nintendo should be doing is charging players money for novelty items.

I think items should be unlocked through achievements, not through buying. For example, if Ocarina of Time had achievements, it could be like you get an achievement for getting the Master Sword, and then you get a Master Sword for your Mii.

I'm not saying I really favour play coins, but wouldn't it be like achievements, since you can maybe only "buy" those special items "Hylian Shield" for instance?
Wii U would be maybe more suited, as maybe you'd be able to use and interact with said Mii items.

I went crazy and bought a Gryffindor uniform for my Avatar + a wand. I love Harry Potter. There are even moments when I go into the marketplace just to try stuff on my Avatar. Also I would love to be able to buy wallpaper for the 3DS and Wii U I like my Limbo wallpaper on my 360.

As I've said before, selling hats for money is an excellent idea that all game studios should embrace wholeheartedly. Why? Because only idiots would spend real cash-moneys on novelty virtual headwear. Thereby Nintendo makes sizable profits off morons (see also: Team Fortress 2, Valve), partially offsetting costs incurred elsewhere - piracy, running costs etc - without having to pass those costs on to the normal consumer.
It also means that the normal consumer can quickly identify on sight the behatted morons in their online games (for after spending hard-earned cash on their 'amusing' headgear, they have no choice but to parade it around in every game they own in an attempt to back up their decision to purchase it) and promptly avoid prolonged contact.
