I never owned a Wii, I own no games on the Wii virtual console. I had hoped by now the Wii U virtual console would have all the N64 games the Wii virtual console has but no such luck. So now I am looking to purchase N64 games on the Wii virtual console VIA my Wii U.
So, the question is, what do I have for controller options if I wish to play N46 games through the Wii virtual console through my Wii U? I have seen the "Classic controller" and "Classic controller pro", but will these work OK?
My other concern is not about hardware compatibility but on functionality. The N64 made heavy use of the c-buttons, effectively requiring you to have 6 buttons on the right side of the controller (A, B, C Up/Down/Left/Right). From what I have seen, the "Classic" and "Pro" controllers do not have these buttons.. how does it deal with this?
You have to use the classic controller or classic controller pro. It maps the c-buttons to the right joystick. The Z button is both ZL and ZR. L and R are L and R.
Geez, Chumble. Sorry my response wasn't good enough for you, even though I told you the exact same thing.
You're both saying different things. You said I can use Classic or Pro for the Wii VC. FutureAlphaMale is saying I can't use the Pro even though you (and other sources) seem to indicate otherwise.
Both of the other posters are right - you cannot use the Wii U Pro Controller while in Wii Mode (so you cannot use it for Wii Virtual Console games). You can only use it while playing Wii U software or Wii U Virtual Console software. When playing Nintendo 64 games in Wii Mode, your only options are the Classic Controller or the Classic Controller Pro. However, do note that Nintendo has confirmed the addition of the Nintendo 64 to the Wii U Virtual Console in the future, and I think it's a very safe bet to say you will be able to play these games using the Wii U Pro Controller or the Wii U GamePad.
And just to be absolutely certain, so you don't get confused, the Classic Controller Pro and the Wii U Pro Controller are two very different things. The former is a Wii controller which is compatible with a number of Wii and Wii U games; the latter is compatible only with Wii U software.

He said classic controller pro not the same as the pro controller.
Be warned that if you're trying to connect a Wavebird to it, it may not work. I'm hearing reports of it not working on regular Wiimotes, but the newer Wiimotes with the Motion Plus built-in do work. Don't ask me why that is.

Ok, see where the breakdown in communication was. When FutureAlphaMale mentioned the "pro controller", I assumed he was talking about the "Classic Controller Pro".
Am I correct in these?
1) Wii Classic Controller - Wired, Works with Wii, Wii VC, Wii U (Some games), Wii U VC
2) Wii Classic Controller Pro - Wired, Same as Wii Classic Controller with better design
3) Wii Pro Controller - Wireless, Works for Wii U (Some games) and Wii U Virtual Console games.
In this case, I would put the Wii Classic Controller Pro (2) over the Wii Classic Controller (1), leaving the main choice between the Wii Classic Controller Pro (2) and the Wii Pro Controller (3). Differences being the Pro (3) is wireless, has a different layout, and can only be used on the Wii U. The Classic Pro (2) can be used across both but is wired.
Do I finally have a grasp of this?
Thanks,
Chumble
