Topic: Local multiplayer games

It seems like the most popular games on the Wii U right now are Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros, both which are not regular games but rather Nintendo characters competing. The only disc game I have got for the Wii U so far is Wind Waker and I'm feeling hesitant towards games like Super Smash Bros because their praise centers around the local multiplayer aspect and I don't have the kind of friends that would be interested in that.

So are they worth it for mainly singleplayer and online multiplayer?

I'm gonna be pedantic, Smash and Kart aren't co-op. Co-op is when you work with someone in the game for a common goal which is different to general multiplayer.

Mario Kart and Smash Bros are fine to play with by yourself and offer enough content in single player to get around 30hrs out of it.

Both Smash and MK8 are great online, and so if nothing else you use the single-player option to practise.

If you want local co-op then consider 3DWorld, Rayman, NSMBU.

I think Splatoon is more popular than MK8 right now, in terms of total gaming hours worldwide during the past weeks. MK8 is still a excellent game, though (specially online with the DLCs).

Because of Nintendo's poor online communication methods, you're not going to be able to talk to players unless you have them added as friends. So, it might sometimes feel like you're just playing against the CPUs. There's a lot of stuff to collect and do in Smash, but I feel that it's more fun to have friends who also play Smash. In my opinion, I wouldn't buy Mario Kart 8 because you're just going to be racing by yourself the whole time in single player. It's going to get lonely. You can play online with people, but you can't talk to them unless they're your friends. You still can't talk to your friends if you're playing with strangers as well. You can only talk to your friends in MK8 if it's a friends-only lobby.

@TylerTheCreator: I think the hours many people, including myself, have clocked in MK8 suggests loneliness doesn't have to be a factor. If you own a Wii U but don't have MK8 then you should have an active dislike for Mario Kart, cos otherwise it's as essential as they come, friends or no.

@gcunit: It's not essential to everyone.

what's a regular game? is any game with Nintendo characters competing not a "regular game"?

your friends aren't interested in local multiplayer? assuming we're still talking video games, what exactly are they interested in? Watching you play Wind Waker?

Smash and Mario Kart are not just multiplayer or online games. They are full-fledged Nintendo titles, AAA titles! I think I know what you're trying to say, but yes, absolutely, undoubtedly, I mean every single game in both series' is still played, 10, 15, 20 years on, they all stand the test of time, they all have gameplay and customisations that keep you going back, don't they?

They're the best games on the system.. period.

@TylerTheCreator: yeah, if you're not playing Mario Kart 8 why even bother owning a WiiU? For me, Mario Kart 8 is all about the online multiplayer. Communication is fine for that. I don't know why you'd want to talk to anyone in that game anyways? The best online multiplayer games in my opinion are Mario Kart, Smash, and Splatoon. Communication isn't an issue for me with any of these.

@martinskrtel37: I'm referring to games like Mario bros and such. My friends are more interested in online multiplayer on PC.

I know, that's why I referenced people with an active dislike for Mario Kart. Thanks for reading.

Because the Wii U has many other great games. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, New Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D World, Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, and others.

It's an issue for me and an issue for many others. I want to talk in that game because there is no good reason why I shouldn't be able to. It would be fun to talk to the other racers. It would feel like a big fun party.

You're not being nice.

Just because someone doesn't think Mario Kart is essential doesn't mean they have an active dislike for the series. For example, to some people, Smash is more their speed.
