Hey guys,
So I've been trying to think of some last minute christmas gift ideas from my parents and of course I needed to get my Nintendo on. I got the 3DS pretty much covered (Mom already got me Link Between Worlds, Pokemon Y) and I got most of the first party games coming from other family members (Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3). I decided I wanted to pick up a 3rd party title. I already have Wonderful 101, so between Batman Arkham Origins, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut, Assassin's Creed IV and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, what would you recommend?? If you had to pick only two of those titles, which would they be?

I love Nintendo, Sony & Microsoft - why? I am a true gamer.

I can definitely see me picking up Monster Hunter for that reason, I'm more stuck on the other three. Never played Deus Ex before, looks pretty good but I don't know much about it. I really loved Arkham City, but all the reviews I've seen says Origins is not nearly as good. I actually have not been a huge fan of Assassin's Creed, didn't like the 3rd one, second was good, and the first one was okay but I always thought the combat was boring and the storyline struck me as stupid with the whole animus and alien sub-plot. The lack of aliens and the more open world with the IV entry in the series is drawing me back in.

If you like the idea of sailing around and exploring islands, go with Assassins Creed. If you want to shoot things, go with Deus Ex.

Deus Ex: HR practically made me fall asleep and I had to force myself to finish the game. The setting alone makes AC more interesting than Deus Ex. If you're going to pick up a PS4 or Xbox One though, pick up Deus Ex and get AC for one of the next gen systems.

Hmmmm... I can see your point about the story, I did hear Deus Ex it was somewhat languidly paced. What are your opinions on Batman: Arkham Origins? I will not be picking up either of the next gen systems this year, maybe the PS4 down the road. Still have a huge backlog of PS3 games as I never owned it during the last generation, and I still want to get a Vita.

Pretty late to be going Christmas shopping isn't it? Shops are crazy and it's still a few days before the real crazy hits in.

As for the question.... Assassin's Creed is probably your best bet. Outside of the first party stuff it's about the best game on the system. I would also make the same recommendation for people who are buying a PS4 or XBOne, it's the best across all of them. The only other option I'd seriously look at is Need for Speed: Most Wanted. It has been out for a bit so you can probably get it a bit cheaper but it's still worth looking at. You'll bring it out more than you will Assassin's Creed over the life of your console that's for sure.

Haven't played it so I know as much as you do, but the reviews pretty much unanimously agree Origins is a step down from Arkham City and Asylum. If you have a lot of games to play already, I probably wouldn't waste time on a lesser entry in that series unless you're a huge Batman fan.

AC4 or Arkham Origins - reviewers complain for the sake of complaining, what they fail to mention is that the story is 100 times better than in City, and fighting is improved, so there is less hitting air than City and fighting is much more fluid. If you liked Asylum or City, this one is a must.

  • Origins is fine but like others said, its not as good so I would wait for it to be discounted(snaged it $20 for PC and its well worth that price).
  • Monster Hunter is not for everyone, I personally love it but I would spend some time with the demo(even though its terrible but just to give an idea of what the game is)
  • AC4 is a blast compared to 3, for the most part it is the complete opposite

Deus Ex is probably the best third-party single player experience on Wii U. If you like the original (one of my all time faves), just buy it. None of the others will come close. The Gamepad makes it far and away the most playable and enjoyable version out there. Having a big radar map in your lap as opposed to a squished box in the corner of the screen is a huge boon.

Also, the story is really good (doesn't hold a candle to the original, though) and the game itself is extremely replayable, as your actions matter. If you're up to it, attempting a no-kill run is an intense puzzle. HR is well-designed to encourage different tactics and exploration, making such a run not only possible, but extremely rewarding. Seriously, the level design might be the HR's biggest triumph.

I can understand falling asleep (the pacing is probably comparable to Arkham City, which lulled me more than a few times), because the game lets you loose in it's dense cities a little early and a little too freely, it's always a struggle not to wander. But that's the beauty of choice. The same thing happens to me in every Elder Scrolls release... I've never fallen asleep so consistently in my life and that's because the alluring freedom leads me to aimless exploration. I wouldn't say these type of games are boring or sleep-inducing, it's just how you approach it mentally. My wife constantly falls asleep in the middle of Injustice battles. She loves the game, but something about it just lulls her to sleep (maybe my own boredom with that joke of a fighting game).

My point is, it's not necessarily relevant information to you that someone else falls asleep playing a game. There are many unknown variables and circumstances contributing. Mood, time of day, responsibilities, work schedule, etc... I never used to fall asleep gaming, I'd even ridicule my friends who'd pass out in the middle of a Tony Hawk run. Now that I have kids, I do much of my gaming in the late hours (not really a change) and I'm just worn out at that point, which never used to be a problem.

The fact that my family life encourages me to play games tired and, subsequently, fall asleep is hardly relevant information for anyone else. Regardless of which game I choose as my sedative.

This is just terrible advice. It's like saying if you like idea of dancing and grooving to some phat beats, go with Just Dance. If you like jumping on things, go with Super Mario 3D World.

@IlovedemRPGS Just caught your name. Considering you love "demRPGs", this should be a no-brainer. Deus Ex Human Revolution is a topnotch Western RPG. The only other comparable retail game (you do have Eartbound, right? RIGHT?!) on the system is Mass Effect 3. (Good game in its own right. Probably not the best in the series, but for all the pomp, it's really not a necessity to play the entire trilogy, at least not to enjoy the experience for what it is. The story is pretty self-evident and the payoff for those who played the first two is a letdown... I'd actually say that ME3 might be most enjoyable for those new to the series.)

Anyway, HR is a deep, extremely comprehensive game. Do you like to replay RPGs in New Game+? Because it's highly recommended here to get the most of the experience. Especially to attempt a no-kill run, which is one of the most fulfilling tasks of any game on the system (up there with no-death ZombiU runs and any type of Super Mario 3D World run you can muster... No death/no item W101 runs would be awesome, but let's be real here...).

Moreover, if you like RPGs you should have no problem with Deus Ex's pacing. I mean, this isn't a Xenoblade we're talking about here (adore that game, but it is the modern poster child for pacing issues). It's not an exceptionally long game if you don't explore every nook, talk to every NPC, and hack every PC. HR is junk food for OCD gaming tendencies (but I found 107 credits!). If you can't keep that in check, you may need to be institutionalized after it's all said, but the experience is still worth it.

Yeah, yeah... Too much rambling. My wife is waiting for me to go X-mas shopping and here I am on the pot, tapping at a phone about games. Shopping.... ugh. Someone please save me.

Actually I would say that if you like dancing more than platforming, choosing the dancing game is pretty apt advice. lol

Sometimes people put way too much thought into these things.

I would get any one of those over Assassin's Creed IV.

EDIT: I think you'll be fine with 2 of any of those games as long as one of them isn't ACIV.

@ACK It always seemed to me as more of an action shooter, somewhat like Half-Life. As far as RPG elements does it have any leveling up, or character customization?

@IlovedemRPGS It's a Sci-Fi Stealth-Action RPG. It's nothing like Half Life (the original and it's incredible mods being another of my PC faves) or any other game that encourages shooting as a primary solution. Killing is generally frowned upon. Shooting first and foremost will rarely get you far. Instead, stealth awareness is a necessity for much of the game. This means lots of sneaking, sedating/dispatching, dragging, distracting, and evading. A hallmark of the series is a form of branching level design that always equally supports and encourages multiple tactics. You will be consistently rewarded for exploring the surroundings.

Further, the entire Deus Ex franchise was built upon the idea of Bio-Mods (you really should play the original sometime, it's genuinely one of the best Western-developed RPGs ever conceived and an eloquently thought-provoking game), which function as a character progression and customization system (through Praxis points, obtained by exploration or experience). The basic alignment is Stealth/Combat. Stealth skills are stuff like cloaking, hacking, movement upgrades, enhanced radar, controlling turrets/robots, etc. Combat covers weapon skills, biotic weaponry, and the like. You are free to purchase skills in any fashion.

It also must be emphasized that much of the game is occupied with non-lethal detective work. Lots of sleuthing, conversing, coercing, hacking, etc... This is possibly where pacing could be a problem for some, but the world is compelling and elaborate enough to be engaging and even thrilling outside of combat.

HR has a lot to offer. Check it out. I admire anyone who hasn't experienced the original Deus Ex or Human Revolution.

I'm not entirely sure which one to recommend but I'm confident in saying Deus Ex is the best game on that list, so there's that.
