I'd spend the rest of the day speaking with some major third party devs, trying to reach an agreement of sorts.

I still don't understand why people think Wii U is such a bad name. I think the way Nintendo presented the Wii U was the trouble. People don't seem too confused with the Xbox One name.

They made it clear that the Xbox One was not an add-on.
If they had at least called it the "Super Wii" or something, people would have known the difference despite the crappy marketing.

I don't think it was the name that caused confusion. The name didn't help but Nintendo is trying to build a brand in "Wii." The big problem with the Wii U is that they didn't show the console at the E3 it was announced but they did show the controller. In my opinion if you are going to show off new hardware for a new console you need to either explicitly say it is for a new console or show the new console too.

Mario toys at McDonalds, like Japan.

AR eShop cards, like Japan.

That robot in the patent would happen.

App for my Wii U to control the heater/AC, lights, etc. in my house.

Pizza Hut app

7-11 coupons for energy drinks or slurpees

Make Tony Hawk's Pro Skater exclusive for Wii U

Dolby Pro Logic IIx support

Turn everyone's HDTV into a 3D TV with optional hardware add-on

Wii Music, except it uses the GamePad with 9-axis utilization

Dance Dance Revolution exclusive with at least 2 Wii balance boards and compatible with the songs you get on Wii Karaoke U

No what I mean is to invest in the next generation. The 3ds is set now and will sell copies by itself. The Wii U would need a lot a great games before next year ends, and it doesn't look like there will be more than a few good games ready. Nintendo should've been working on wii u games in 2009-2010 when the wii was dying. Failure to prepare is failing to care.

Please undastanding since 2012.

It's a good thing nobody in this thread is a CEO of any company let alone Nintendo. The only good idea I've seen is the suggestion to put GBA titles on the 3DS VC. They should do that and they should also rapidly expand the Wii U VC. Then make it so purchases on one service carry over to the other. That would make people more comfortable buying VC titles and they would therefore buy more. I actually see this happening in the medium term.

Rest of you are just.... umm no.... don't...

You do realize R&D is currently working on the next set of systems anyway. Also, it takes years of planning and development to develop the right system. They just don't pop up in a few weeks notice. And they did work on Wii U games: Nintendo Land, Super Mario Bros U and Game and Wario.

You're right, it's not confusing.

Literally nobody mistook the Xbox One for the original Xbox, released over a decade prior. The Wii U however is being sold in stores alongside the Wii.

I don't understand how some people can't see the difference. Also it is ironic how some people are saying no ideas in this thread would be profitable because none of us are CEOs. In this case, would it not take a CEO to know whether an idea is good or bad?

None of us know the financial ramifications of almost any decision, so people dismissing the ideas of others are equally as misguided as the posts they are dismissing.

I wouldn't actually focus much on the 3ds either, it seems to be just fine. Maybe invest time into creating the inevitable HDS with REAL 3d.

And it's unreasonable to say these are bad ideas? As I said, the best suggestion in this thread was expansion of the Virtual Console service. That makes sense and would help with the bottom line. Rest of this stuffs? Mostly fan wishes that probably wouldn't result in a net-profit and ... also stuffs that SCAR suggested....

As for the XBOne, it's a bad name they've just got a different sort of audience who understands what the difference is more. I don't think the Wii U's name has much at all to do with why it's selling as bad as it has been. More likely it's a case of it not being clear enough why the Wii U is a step up. Same thing was said of the 3DS when it launched and early sales were bad. When the software came along it was clear it didn't matter because it started to move units.

Having somewhat stupid suggestions is what makes this thread good, though :P
Someone said Virtual Boy 2 and I thought that was pretty funny,..

I really do think SOME of my suggestions would be cool. Maybe not the 7-11 one or Pizza Hut, but the rest are pretty cool if they could really happen.

I miss the skateboarding games. Tying songs across a series of music games would be pretty hard, although it would be great if it worked that way.

Well the thread certainly doesn't seem like the omnium gatherum of successful endeavors, I'll agree to that. lol

But to write off nearly everything in this thread would be impossible. Even for the seemingly silly things, like toys at McDonalds, we don't know the production cost vs the potential profit. With the way probability works, chances are even a couple seemingly stupid ideas would work out in Nintendo's favor.

This in a hypothetical world though. In the real world would a company ignore the risks to employ one of these more whimsical ideas? Probably not..

I think Toys at McDonalds was probably the closest thing to one that kinda made sense in SCAR's list. Even then though you have to wonder to what end. Things like Maccas toys are purely there for marketing to children and I don't think Mario has much of a problem there. There's also the fact that Nintendo are already very good at merchandise. I don't know about the US but if you walk into one of the big stores here you can grab Pokemon and Mario Plushies fairly easily as well as shirts and various RC Mario Karts. The only gaming brand that comes even remotely close to Nintendo in that area is Minecraft.

And yeah, I get that some people were having fun but that doesn't make their ideas any less bad. Ok cool new Starfox, I get that. Or have crazy CEO parties in the misapprehension that a CEO is a rockstar, that's awesome. Fire the marketing department? Kill the Wii U and start from scratch? Umm... no, I think they know how to run a company better than people in this thread do ;)

what would I do ..... ok! first off, Nintendo will only be responsible for making Pokémon games, everything else is out the window for the most part now. gona purchase and integrate creatures inc and game freak so they'll no longer be separate. the 3DS colors will be changed to pokeball red, great ball blue, and master ball purple. the wii u will have a un-evolved basic model, and a mega evolved deluxe model. . New Pokémon franchises will be the following: The Legend of Pikachu, Metroid Prime Trainers, Pikmon, Super Pokémon Galaxy, Super Pocket Monsters Brawl, Primeape Kong Country, and Kirby (we're turning Kirby into an event legendary Pokémon.) as the day nears its end Iwata is going to mysteriously disappear leaving me in control forever. We will continue to go on making only Pokémon games untill there is a total of ten thousand different Pokémon. After that Nintendo will stop making games and move onto other business ventures. an unspecified number of years later a mass series of commercials pop up advertising a new console shaped like a pokedex and a new Pokémon game to go with it. a month after this the consoles and games will be brought out in stores. people who purchase the new game and console within 24 hours of its release will receive 6 replica pokeballs as a bonus for purchasing on day one. 24 hours later I will unveil that I've had the Nintendo genetic engineering team (because im sure Nintendo has one) create real living breathing Pokémon. all ten thousand species of the now living Pokémon will be unleashed on the world. everyone who purchased the game within the last 24 hours will be forced to capture Pokémon using the pokeballs they were given in order to use them in an all out battle to the end. those who didn't buy the game day one and as a result cant defend themselves against the Pokémon ... im not sure what will happen to them actually, but its probably something that isn't very good. The battles will continue until one player is left standing. this player will receive the wonderful prize of knowing he/she gets to be the one and only person in the world who has the memory successfully beating the newest Pokémon game. this player will also receive one whole cookie! (pokeball shaped of course).

if for some reason that plan of mine doesn't work, then I guess id try to get more games coming onto the virtual console. Oh and maybe work on getting download purchases tied to our Nintendo Network ID's instead of the console.

I'd fire Iwata and Reggie first and foremost. Then I'd dip into some of those vast reserves and hire a director of marketing not afraid to completely over-saturate the market with tv commercials. I want as many, if not more, time slots as the PSbone. Follow that with a unified account system. Then I'd take a trip down to R&D and make sure the next console (because there will be another one) has the power to at least compare with what will be considered state-of-the-art when released. Wii-Wii U games will all be backwards compatible, and the VC will be a complete library of all Nintendo published games from the NES on through the Wii via digital download.
Then just for fun I'd send a bunch of pizza's over to the head of EA and Pachter.

As CEO I would be willing to spend a billion on goodwill:

Free games for everyone who bought a Wii U on day one.
Revive all the IPs that I personally like
Make the motion controlled games that the Wii should have had, but in HD for Wii U
Advertise new IP as strongly as Mario stuff.
Buy studios just to annoy Sony and MS fans
Slow down 3DS game production in favour of Wii U
Reggie in Smash
Ultra violent 'Luigi returns to a messed up Brooklyn" game

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

In an alternate reality in which I could walk and chew gum at the same time as far as video games and economics, I would:

  • Buy back Rareware from Microsoft; then fill Rare with people with the talent that would match the old Rare's since today's Rare is just not the same
  • Have Rare develop a new Banjo-Kazooie for Wii U
  • Boost marketing everywhere, but especially in Europe
  • Get my foot in the door of China
  • Have the 2D Mario developers develop a new 2D Mario that is not New Super Mario Bros.
  • For the next 3D Mario for Wii U, have the 3D Mario developers start making a 3D Mario that is completely new with sandbox gameplay similar to 64
  • New Paper Mario game for Wii U that has turn-based battles like the first two games
  • Green-light development of new Star Fox and F-Zero titles for Wii U
  • After they got done with Tropical Freeze, have Retro Studios start making a new Metroid for Wii U
  • Focus a bit more on Wii U than 3DS since it's struggling
  • For 3DS, start production of new, smaller games that are remastered versions of old NES games like Ice Climber for the 3DS eShop
  • Have a new WarioWare and Wario Land be made for 3DS
  • Mario Kart 8 DLC of all the retro tracks in past Mario Kart games in HD sometime after release
  • Super Smash Bros. DLC sometime after release, though I would have to be in careful contact with Sakurai and his team to get it right
All of this would obviously take more than one day, but this is an alternate reality scenario.
